One of the reasons Vermont uniquely stands out from the other states can be found in the absence of billboards cutting across our beautiful agricultural landscape. But since 2011, advertising along the roadside has taken on a revolutionary change. Now, instead of the beauty of the Green Mountain State being only for postcards and photos for tourists, the alluring characteristics of a naturally appealing state are supplemented by artistic creations fashioned out of something with a Vermont brand, our hay.
Wyatt Vincent, a local Addison County resident, has been creating beautiful works of art in the forms of animals, vehicles, buildings, and even the famous Vermont maple syrup jug, armed with bales of hay and cans of spray paint. Since 2011, Wyatt has been hired by businesses for his talent, and has also graciously crafted creations for charities free of charge. Depending on the complexity of the project, it usually takes one to four days to complete each masterpiece with the help of friends and family.
After observing the hay bale art that was built for the Killington Hay Festival several years back, Wyatt knew instantly that it was an undertaking he wanted to try. “I’ve always been into building things,” he says. “I am fortunate to have been born with a gift of being able to envision what a project will look like once it is completed.” But according to Mr. Vincent, creating art out of hay was not a talent he was originally aware of until he began his first creations for the Humane Society. “After that,” he says, “the rest just fell into place.”
Now, it is common practice for Vermont families to find enjoyment from Wyatt’s hay creations in car trips around the area. The artist’s favorite, Klaus, the dog in front of The Automaster, and the Tractor Trailer in front of the Jiffy Mart in Ferrisburgh, are just two of the famous Vermont hay sculptures. Families visiting Field Days this week will have the pleasure of witnessing in person the likes of those bale creations along with, “some old, some new, and some special creations designed for representing Field Days,”according to Wyatt. So come to Addison County Field Days and don’t be surprised if a helicopter, cow, and yes maybe even a Minion make an appearance.
No matter where you are or where you are going, Wyatt Vincent’s hay bale creations are appealing to the eye and will put a smile on your face. The lovable characters fashioned out of this Vermont product not only bring awareness to projects, businesses, and charities. They also represent the Green Mountain State in a new and inventive way.
