Serama Chickens are nicknamed the “Pixie Chick” and are new to Addison County agriculture but ancient when it comes to domesticated fowl. The miniature Serama Chickens originally hail from the Malaysian state of Kelentan and are thought to have originated centuries ago from small chickens that were a gift from the King of Thailand. Serama Chickens are a cross between Japanese and Malaysian birds and emerged named after the title of Rama or the King of Thailand and was established formally as a breed in 1990.
The Serama breed is often called ‘ayam katik’ (pygmy chickens) and ‘ayam cantik’ (pretty chickens) in the native language of Malaysia. The chickens are also in competitions and often scored not for their size but for appearance and personality. Breeders love chickens with fierce warrior like appearances but actual calm and manageable personality. They were brought to America in the late 1990's, quickly gained a following and now have organizations that support the breed here in America. The Serama Council of North America (SCNA) held the first show for the Serama in New Orleans in 2004.
Recently Serama Chickens have been seen at several local farms in Addison County and their owners are enthusiastic about these colorful and silky groomed birds. They do lay eggs but the appeal of this specialty breed seems to be more in the line of being pets and their unique appearance. Serama rooster Flashy and hen Cookie live at the Garden Goddess in North Ferrisburgh and seem quite taken in by all the curiosity of people stopping initially to get plants and flowers and simply staying and staring as the pair holds court in the yard.
While Vermonters are used to Vermont agriculture including some unique and diverse animal partnerships, the Serama is one of the newest and fastest growing in the county. If you are out and about and see a new fancy fowl do not be surprised. It is simply Vermont's newest addition to life on the farm and the Serama will happily show you their tails at the required forty-five degree angle forming a ‘V’ and a head that is proudly small and carried held back. Simply put, Serama are red carpet ready at a moment's notice and these mighty fine fowl are fashion ready.
