The Vergennes Commodores had a very successful week of basketball. On Friday, the boys defeated the Enosburg Hornets. In the first quarter, Vergennes took a small lead, but Enosburg was still not too far behind. The first quarter ended 14-8. In the second quarter, the Commodores slowly began to increase their lead to 14 points, aided mainly by juniors Allen LaBerge and Derrick Mardin. The half ended with a score of 35-21. In the third quarter, the Commodores were able to maintain the gap, but the Hornets were slowly pushing in. The third finished out 46-35. Going in to the fourth quarter, Commodore fans thought it was all wrapped up. But, Enosburg was not done playing yet.

During the last quarter then slowly narrowed the gap, at one point coming with one point of the Commodres. But, Vergennes was not done either. They pushed back and claimed a victory. The final score of the game was 60-52, Commodores. High scorers for Vergennes were juniors Allen LaBerge with 22 points and Derrick Mardin and Jess Lalumiere with 10 each. For the Hornets, it was senior Daren Rivard with 19 points for his team.

The next afternoon the Commodore girls faced off against the Milton Yellowjackets. In the first quarter, Milton’s defense was more than a match for Vergennes. The Yellowjackets topped the Commodores 13-8. In the second quarter, Vergennes came back, barely slipping past Milton. The half ended with a score of 24-26. In the third quarter, the Commodores continued to climb past the Yellowjackets. The third quarter finished out with a score of 46-60, Vergennes.

But in the fourth quarter, the Yellowjackets showed that this was still anyone‚s game. They continued to close the gap, and put pressure on Vergennes. But, the Commodores were able to maintain their lead and win the game. The final score was 49-42, Vergennes. As this was the last regular season home game, it was also senior night. The Commodores will be losing 5 seniors this year. They are: Tawnee Deyette, Elizabeth “Cheeze” Goyette, Andrea Gauthier and captains Bridgette Bolduc and Mandy Scott. They will all be missed next year, but for now, we wish them luck in the play-offs.
