VUHS Boys Varsity Basketball

    The Vergennes boys played a tough week of basketball. On Tuesday, they played the Colchester Lakers. Vergennes maintained control in the first quarter, slipping by Colchester. The quarter ended 16-12, Commodores. In the second quarter, Colchester was able to get past the Commodores. The half ended 30-27, Lakers. In the third quarter, Colchester continued their slight lead against Vergennes, finishing the third 36-31. The Lakers sealed their victory in the final quarter. The final score of the game was 52-45, Colchester. High scorer for Vergennes was junior Elis Gallien with fifteen points. For Colchester it was junior Kris Cauchon with eighteen points and sophomore Nick Meunier with thirteen points.

    Thursday, the Commodore faced off against the Milton Yellowjackets. Before the game started, senior captain Nate Merrill presented a check for $250 to the Milton team, to go to senior Jeff Cota who is currently battling cancer. Then, AAU Pro-City coach Jim Darragh presented the team with $300 for the same cause. Later in the game, the 50/50 raffle went toward Cota‚s treatment, the winner donating back his win. In total, almost $750 went to Jeff Cota and his family. This was a great demonstration of generosity on the part of the VUHS community. Now, on to the basketball game. In the first quarter, Vergennes kept a narrow lead, ending the quarter 10-7. In the second quarter, Vergennes began to lengthen their lead. The half finished with a score of 28-19, Commodores. The third quarter saw more points by Vergennes, continuing their lead. The third ended 47-31. In the fourth quarter, Vergennes sealed their victory. The final score was 60-50, Vergennes. High scorers for Vergennes were junior Derrick Mardin with fifteen points, junior Jesse Lalumiere and sophomore Josh Carter with eleven each. For the Yellowjackets, it was senior Brian Phelps with twelve points and senior Ryan Smith with ten.
