Addison County Firefighters Hold 63rd Annual Meeting

    The Addison County Firefighters Association held their 63rd annual meeting at the Addison County Eagles Club on Wednesday night. This event honors the firefighters that support the Addison County Firefighters Association throughout the year. They also recognized the 10 firefighters that passed away this year. Nearly 200 firefighters attended the event in support of their county. Governor Jim Douglas was presented with a t-shirt for this years Vermont State Fire Conference that will be held in Middlebury on July 27-29th.

    This year’s fire chief of the year is Alan Mayer of the New Haven Fire Department. The Middlebury Fire Department was honored twice, as Michael Farnsworth was named Line Officer of the year, and Michael Mayone was named Firefighter of the year. This years Emergency Maintenance Technician of the Year is Ken Manchester of Cornwall Fire Department. The Senior Firefighter of the year is Earl Fisher of Ferrisburg. This is a big year for Mr. Fisher, as it is also his 50th year of service, and he is still very active. Three ACFA members were voted as Life Members. Dean Gilmore of the New Haven Fire Department and Charles Huizenga and Norton "Buck" Bunnitt both of Monkton Fire Department were awarded with this honor.

    This years ACFA Regional Fire School was dedicated to Bernard DuBois of the Addison Fire Department. DuBois was also awarded with this years President’s Award. Each year the president of the ACFA chooses one firefighter who demonstrates an extreme dedication to the ACFA. The President of the Vermont State Firefighters Association Mike Greenia awarded Jim Larrow of the Vergennes Fire Department the Vermont State Distinguished Service Award. The Lincoln Fire Department was awarded for having the most training hours per firefighter of any other ACFA Fire Department. The ACFA also awarded Greg’s Market and Precision Print and Copy for their support throughout the year. The Addison County Eagles Club presented the ACFA with a donation of $1,000. Bill and Connie Houston were recognized for donating $500 to the Ray E. Davison Scholarship Fund. The ACFA also elected four officers. James Breur as the new President of the ACFA, Thomas Estey as the Vice President, Karen Taylor as the Secretary, and Howard Grant as the Treasurer. This years event was a great success, many deserving firefighters were recognized for the outstanding work they do each year.
