Domestic Violence Not a Dispute

I would like to comment on the language that is used in the media.  Language is a powerful tool, and in accurate reporting language matters.  I appreciate every thing everyone goes through to get the news to us, and done so objectively.  I understand that in reporting news you need to be neutral.  The media is a very powerful tool that millions listen to and read.  While the words domestic dispute sounds objective, I feel it is deceiving.  A dispute is an argument between couples, of equal power, that don’t agree on something.  It is a healthy part of a relationship.  Disputes do not become news, nor do they become abusive or deadly.  It is being reported the murder-suicide in Lyndonville was a dispute.  This is violence, women who are being beaten and killed don’t have a say in the argument; or even in their lives.  The mere word dispute minimizes the action; it makes domestic violence sound not so bad.  What’s the message we are sending to our children.  I would like to think that together we can educate the community, and the media could choose different language, and these cases could be more accurately reported.  Please receive this as an educational opportunity.  The state domestic violence hotline number is 1-800-228-7395 or (1-800-ABUSE95).

In Search of the Truth

This letter is directed to the Salisbury gang of 27.  Twenty-seven individuals who shroud themselves under the role of a very official sounding committee.  The Committee for Truth and Justice in Salisbury Government.  You have been free in naming names and making accusations but remain anonymous.  Why is this so?  If you speak the truth, then you have nothing to hide.  If your work is not worth putting your name on and accepting public criticism both favorable and unfavorable, then it is not worth public consideration.  No constructive results can be achieved when you hide your identity and send your letter to selected townspeople.  Your letter is meaningless.
