Roscoe H. Pratt

Bridport – Roscoe H. Pratt, 90, of Bridport passed away peacefully on Friday, November 10, 2006 surrounded by his loving family.

    Roscoe was born in Bridport on December 9, 1915, the son of Harry and Esther (Bean) Pratt.  Roscoe was schooled in what became the Pratt School and graduated from Middlebury Union High School in 1934.  From 1934 – 1942 he worked various jobs then joined the United States Air Force serving in Texas as a helicopter mechanic.  During his years in the service he earned The Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and American Theater Ribbon.

    On November 2, 1946 he married Patricia Morcombe at the Congregational Church in the town of Bridport where they would raise their four children and live their life.

   Roscoe worked as a truck driver for the Town of Bridport and then became a meat cutter at the Freeze Locker in Middlebury working there until 1969 when he and his son purchased the former Broughton’s IGA in Bridport and began Pratt’s Store which is still owned and operated today by two generations of the Pratt family.

    Over the years, Roscoe served as moderator and deacon for the Bridport Congregational Church and served as an auditor for the Town of Bridport.  Roscoe served on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer for the Middlebury Lions Club and was proud to help with the yearly delivery of Lion’s food baskets, collecting items for their annual auction and helping however he could at their food booth at Field Days and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship award. The 4H Club in Bridport was established because of Roscoe’s work with Bernard Nadeau.  Roscoe was also instrumental in purchasing the land that would become the home of the Bridport Horseshoe Club.  Roscoe continued to be involved in what is now the Barrow's Town Park, which includes a skating rink, picnic area and a bridge to connect to the school for use by the elementary school.

    Roscoe is survived by his wife, Patricia, with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage on November 2, 2006, his children, Don and wife Leatrice of Rutland, Darwin and wife Sue of Bridport, Carolyn Rouse and husband John of Salisbury and Dean of Burlington.  Roscoe is also survived by his brother Warren and wife Barbara of Middlebury, his grandchildren, Stacey Stone and husband Todd, Corey Pratt and Laurie Kingman, Erin McAllister and husband Duncan, Michelle Page and husband Matt, Ashley and Kyle Rouse.  Also by his great grandchildren, Adam, Bailey and Kendyl Page, Hillary, Justin and Blair Stone and Devyn Pratt as well as many dear friends and relatives.

  He was predeceased by his parents and a granddaughter, Sarah Pratt.

 Visiting hours will be Monday, November 13th from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 14th at 2:00 p.m. at the Bridport Congregational Church with a gathering of friends and family immediately following at the Bridport Town Hall.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Bridport Congregational Church, c/o Barb Wagner, Cream Hill Road, Bridport, VT 05734 or to the Barrow’s Town Park, c/o Norma Stone, Crown Point Road, Bridport, VT  05734.     Arrangements are under the direction of Sanderson Funeral Service.
