Porter Hospital dedicated its new Birthing Center and Surgical Care Center at a ceremony on Friday, November 10th at 3:00 p.m.

The event was free and open to the public, and was held in an area adjacent to  the new “North Wing”, on the north side of the hospital campus.

The ceremony included brief remarks and acknowledgements by hospital  board chairman, Joe Sutton, Medical Staff President Dr. Allan Curtiss Porter  Medical Center President James L. Daily and PMC board chair, Steve Terry.

A community reception and tours of the new 29,000 square foot facility was offered following the Dedication Ceremony, scheduled to open for patient care services on November 15th.  The event also unveiled designs for a planned landscaped garden and courtyard to be added in the spring of 2007 and dedicated to the memory of long-time Porter volunteer, BJ Calhoun.

The $16.4 million project has received significant community support via more  than $4.4 million in charitable donations, including a $1 million commitment by  Middlebury College.

“The new Birthing Center and Surgical Care Center represent major steps  forward for Porter Hospital in fulfilling our community mission of providing the  highest level of quality medical care through outstanding staff and state-of-the-art  facilities”, said Porter President James L. Daily.  “Porter Hospital and our  community now have the newest surgical facilities and birthing center facilities in  the State of Vermont-and we are extremely proud of this project and gratified by  the outpouring of community support and our partnership with the Bread Loaf  Corporation in building this outstanding new wing.”

The “North Project” is the latest in a long series of capital improvement and  modernization projects at Porter Hospital-including the complete renovation of  the Medical/Surgical Unit in 1994, construction of a new Emergency  Department/Radiology Wing and other Outpatient renovations in 1996 and the  renovation of the Collins Building in 1997.  The new surgical and maternity  departments, set to open in November, represent modernization of facilities that  were built more than 30 years ago, as well as the latest step in the modernization  of every major patient care area of Porter Hospital over the past 12 years.
