Theodore Manley Sargent

Shoreham - Theodore Manley Sargent died peacefully at home in Shoreham on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 after suffering a long illness. His spirit is now free to take long walks again or to do a little dance whenever the urge strikes.

Ted, also known as Bud to many, was born in Ferrisburgh on July 8, 1926 the son of  Lester and Mae (LaMott). He was the second of thirteen children, growing up and living most of his life in Addison County.  Ted was a veteran of WWII, having fought on the European front and most notably was one of the liberators for the death camp at Dachau, Germany.  In his later years, Ted spoke to school groups of those experiences so that students might learn from history's lessons.

In the 1950's, Ted worked on several major construction projects helping to build the power line that runs from Rutland to Milton, and in New York driving bulldozer to create the Eisenhower Locks on the St. Lawrence Seaway.  In the late 1960's, Ted began his career in law enforcement.  He worked for the Middlebury and Bristol Police Departments, and served 25 years as a deputy sheriff for Addison County. Ted also worked over 27 years as a security officer for Middlebury College. Ted made many friends throughout these years and will be greatly missed by all.

Ted is survived by his wife June (Larrabee). From his previous marriage to Beulah Sargent, he is also survived by daughter Tedi Sargent, and her children Amanda DeMilt and Courtney Jennings, and daughter Bonnie Smith and her son Travis.  Four of his siblings also survive him, Barbara Martell, Saundria Jimmo, Stanley Sargent and Les Sargent Jr., as well as many nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, dedication to law enforcement, and his love of and generosity toward children.

Funeral services were held at the Bristol Federated Church on Friday October 13,2006 with committal following at the Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Addison County Home Health and Hospice or to Mount Abraham UHS, attention Cindy Benway, to develop a scholarship in Ted's memory for a graduating senior interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.
