October 2006 Business of the Month award recipient is Bourdeau and Bushey, Inc., located in Middlebury.

James Bushey started Bourdeau and Bushey, Inc along with Germain and Remi Bourdeau in 1982. Their location on Seymour Street was formerly owned by Ralston Purina, and then by Wayne Feeds, before they bought it in 1982. Bourdeau and Bushey's motto is “We care for your land and animals”, and they do just that by providing essential services to area farmers.

Bourdeau and Bushey, Inc. is primarily a dairy agricultural business, providing dairy farmers with the services and products to run their farms successfully. They do this by providing soil and feed testing in addition to spreading fertilizer and lime and providing feed. They also provide plant protection aids, and help farmers to effectively use their soil to produce the best crops. Bourdeau and Bushey, Inc. also help farmers determine how much fertilizer they need to grow their crops to their full potential while at the same time reducing pollution. They even grow corn in their backyard so they can show farmers the different kinds of corn available to them, which helps them make an informed decision about what type of corn to plant.

In addition to providing dairy farmers with these essential services, Bourdeau and Bushey, Inc also offers 80 different diets for dogs, focusing on working dogs that need a high fat, high energy diet, such as sled dogs. They ship these feeds all over New York and New England. They also provide horse diets as well.

Bourdeau and Bushey, Inc. now has 21 employees, who have their very own garden behind the facility. The company has won numerous awards for their involvement in both the community and with local farmers from organizations such as the Future Farmers of America, and Pioneer Seeds. They hold two open houses in February and September each year, in which the general public is allowed to come and tour the facility, all while enjoying a chicken BBQ. During this time, the public is invited to speak with the feed suppliers and ask questions. They also hold an equestrian event each year.

Future plans for Bourdeau and Bushey, Inc. include creating a biomass fuel made out of excess farm feed. By doing this, Bourdeau and Bushey, Inc. is ensuring that local dairy farmers will be given an addtional way to generate income. They also plan to offer a drive thru service for their customers to pick up feed during the evening hours and during the weekend.

Congratulations to Bourdeau and Bushey, Inc  on Seymour Street in Middlebury for being chosen  October 2006 Business of the Month!
