Shirley R. Holcomb

Bristol-Shirley R. Holcomb, 79 died Friday, September 29, 2006 in Bristol.

She was born on February 21, 1927 in Burlington the daughter of Walter and Rita (Blair) Medeiros.

Shirley was a life time member of the VFW Auxiliary in Middlebury, Bristol American Legion Post #19 Auxiliary and Poppy Queen.

She is survived by her husband Clayton Holcomb of Bristol, daughter Tina and grandson Tyler, three sons Rickey, Jonathan, Kenneth, a sister and several brothers, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday Oct 3 at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes. Contributions may be made to the Bristol Rescue Squad. Bristol 05443

FRANK  BANNER

Middlebury- Frank J. Banner, 87 of Court St., died Monday, September 25, 2006 in Middlebury.

Born July 11, 1919 in Nashua, NH, he was the son of the late Joseph and Jadwiga (Kutsewicz) Banusevich.

Frank was a graduate of Nashua High School, Nashua, NH, class of 1937 and class of 1950 of Michigan State College.  In 1939 he joined the Conservation Corps in NH and in 1940 he became a welder at Fall River Shipyard in Quincy and later at Boston Naval Shipyard. He served in the United States Army during WW II. Following graduation from college, he joined the US Forest Service and worked there in the Green Mountain Division until his retirement in 1973.

A resident of Middlebury since 1957, he was a communicant of St. Mary Church.  In addition, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Forestry Club and the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association.

Family members include two sons, Michael A. Banner and his wife Cathy of Agawam, MA, and Albert G. Banner of Middlebury; three daughters, Katherine E. Barter of Warwick, RI, Janet F. Banner of Waterville, VT, and Elizabeth A. Banner and her partner Kobie Cook of Fitchburg, MA; four grandchildren, Sharon L. Barter, Albert J. Banner, Edward M. Banner, and Daniel B. Cook; one great grandchild, Isabel Florence.

Mr. Banner was predeceased by his wife, Florence (Forbes)Banner who died October 12, 1992; and by three brothers, Anthony, Stanley and Joseph.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebratedat St. Mary Church, Middlebury with Rev. Justin Baker, pastor, as celebrant.  Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary Cemetery, Middlebury.

Kenneth H. Goff Sr.

Ferrisburgh- Kenneth H. Goff Sr. 69, died Saturday, September 30, 2006 at his home in Ferrisburgh.

He was born on March 10, 1937 in Middletown, CT. the son of Jerimiah and Ethel (Hall)Goff Sr.

Kenneth is survived by his wife Patricia (Harvey) Goff of Ferrisburgh, four children, Kenneth Michael Goff of Ferrisburgh, Kenneth Herman Goff Jr. of and his wife Kelly of CO. Barbara Lussier and her husband Brian of Ferrisburgh, Christine Goff of Colchester, three grandsons Sebastian, Alexander, Isaiah Goff, brother Jerry Goff of CT., sister Bea Dudley of SC., several nieces and nephews. Kenneth was predeceased by two sisters and a brother.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday Oct. 10 at 11a.m. at the Ferrisburgh United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made to the Ferrisburgh United Methodist Church Building Fund. c\o Anna Husk 1341 Little Chicago Road, Ferrisburgh 05456.  Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes in charge of arrangements.

Warren Nelson

Middlebury–Warren H. Nelson, otherwise known as “Mr. Great, Grand, and Glorious”-his usual response to how are you, succumbed at age 80 to leukemia.  He died at home with his family at his side in Middlebury, September 27, 2006.

He was born in Yonkers, New York; served in the United States Navy in WW II and will be remembered as a loving father and devoted husband and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Fran Nelson, daughter Barb Nelson, son, Steve Nelson, sister Joan Nelson, four grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Warren met his wife Fran at a ski club in New York in 1954 and after their marriage in 1956 they moved to Vermont.         

He worked at Simmonds Precision in Vergennes, retiring after 33 years.  He and Fran then spent time traveling to many exotic places on many continents until failing health restricted further travel.

A celebration of Warren’s life will be held at a later date.  Donations, in lieu of flowers, would be appreciated by Addison County Home Health and Hospice, Inc. P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753 or the Vermont Cancer Center, at the University of Vermont, Burlington., VT.

John R. (Jack) Brown

Ferrisburg- John R. (Jack) Brown, 80, passed away in his sleep at home on Monday October 2, 2006.

Jack was born in Rutland, VT on August 4, 1926 son of Herbert and Mary (Walsh) Brown.

He graduated in 1945 from Mt. St. Joseph Academy in Rutland. He worked for Vermont Marble Company for twenty years and for Simmonds Precision for twenty five years. Also, he was a member of American Legion Post # 14 in Vergennes and he coach Little League in Vergennes, Ferrisburg, and Proctor.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia R. (Mohan) Brown of Ferrisburg; three daughters, Mary and Buddy Johnson of GA; Kathy and Bryan Rose of Essex; Deb and Michael Lavalette of Hinesburg; three sons, Robert and Nobuko Brown of Utah; Bill and Sharon Brown of Vergennes; Brian Brown of WI; 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; his mother in law Hazel Mohan of Brandon; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sister Rita Kittrick and brothers Horace and Ned.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated  on Friday October 6th at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes. Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Vergennes Area Rescue Squad PO Box 11 Vergennes, VT 05491.  

Clyde H. Evarts

Vergennes- Clyde H. Evarts died peacefully in Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington on Tuesday October 3, 2006 after a brief illness.

Clyde was born in Ferrisburgh, Vermont on August 10, 1924, the son of Carlton and Elsie (Kimball) Evarts. He attended Ferrisburgh and Vergennes schools.

Clyde worked with his father farming in the Vergennes area. He also worked for Vergennes Motors and his brother Vance in New Haven, Vermont.

Clyde is survived by his brother Robert L. Evarts and his wife Barbara of Burlington; two sisters-in-law Margaret Evarts of South Burlington and Martha Evarts of New Haven, VT; nieces and nephews, Michael, Mark, Brian, Leslie, Jo-Anne, Robert, Bradley, Laurie, Vance, Alan, Craig, Linda, Pamela, Nancy, Terry, Cherri, Robert and Timmy; and his good friend and neighbor Judy Danyow. He was predeceased by his brothers, Judson, Vance, and Donald and nephews Judson, Scott, and Tommy and sister-in-law Shirley.

Clyde’s family would like to thank the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging Meals-On-Wheels Volunteers who delivered food to Clyde for several years; his neighbors at Valley View Apartments, the staff at Little City Family Practice, Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, Porter Hospital Staff of Middlebury, and all the doctors, nurses, and staff who helped Clyde at Fletcher Allen Hospital. A special thanks to nieces Linda Cooper, Pamela Whittemore, and his friend Judy Danyow.

A funeral service for Clyde will be held at Brown-McClay Funeral Home 48 South Maple Street, Vergennes . on Monday October 9th . Interment in Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes. Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes will be in charge of arrangements.  

Nikolaos ("Nikes") Paraskevopoulos

New Haven- Nikolaos ("Nikes") Paraskevopoulos, 82, died at his home in New Haven, VT Sunday, October 1 after a thirteen-year battle with cancer.

He was born in Galioupe, Egypt, the son of Konstantinos and Cleopatra (Kehayia) Paraskevopoulos, and educated at the American college in Athens, Greece and La Sorbonne in Paris, France.

At the invasion of Greece by the Italian army in 1940, he re-turned to his country to join the Greek army, fighting against the Italian forces and later the Germans until the end of World War II in 1945 followed by the Greek Civil War against the Communists ending in 1947.

After owning and operating a soap factory for several years, he built a passenger ferry operating it between the island of Evia and mainland Greece. In 1962 he designed and built a 100', 20-passenger luxury charter yacht, the M/Y Arvi, which he operated throughout the Agean, Ionic and Adriatic Seas for 35 years. Among his many illustrious "guests" were the Beatles of England, King Juan Carlos of Spain, the Guccis of Italy, the Martels and Hennessys of France, and the Henkels of Germany.

In 1995 he married Ruth (Landon) Merritt of New Haven, VT, a former "guest" on the And. and business partner in the operation of it. In 1997 he sold the yacht, retired and moved to New Haven permanently

He is survived by his wife, a son and wife, Constantin and Natalie of Paris, France, a step-daughter and husband, Claudia and Thomas O'Neill of Staunton, VA, a step-son and partner, George Tracy Merritt and Floria Borlovan of Colchester, VT, a step-daughter and partner, Lauria and David Connolly of E. Calais, VT, a step-granddaughter, Megan O'Neill of Stanton, VA, a step-granddaughter, Abigail van den Noort of Montpelier, VT, two step-grandsons, Jack and George ("Rory") Connolly of E. Calais, VT, a brother, Efstathios Paraskevopoulos of Glyfada, Greece, and two nieces of Athens, Greece

He was predeceased by a brother, Georges, a sister, Aspasia Mylona and his first wife, Elvira Kominatou.

A funeral service was held at the New Haven Congregational Church on Thursday, October 5  followed by interment in Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bristol Rescue Squad, Inc., P.O. Box 227, Bristol, VT 05443 or the Addison County Home Health and Hospice, Inc., P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VY 05753 Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol in charge of arrangements.

Daniel C. Haire

Burlington- Daniel C. Haire passed away in Fletcher Allen Health Care on Sunday, October, I, 2006 following a long illness.

Daniel was born on Sept. 8, 1960, in Burlington, son of Jean (Brewster) Blanchard.

Daniel is survived by his three brothers: David & Barbara Haire, of Hinesburg; Timothy & Laura Blanchard, of Topeka, Kansas; Randy & Betty Blanchard, of Jericho; and one sister, Nancy (Haire) LeClair, of Winooski. Daniel was predeceased by: a nephew, Jeremy Blanchard; an uncle, Reid Brewster;

Graveside services will be held Saturday Oct 7, at 10:a.m. in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol. Arrangements are in the care of Brown-McClay Funeral Home, Bristol. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to COTS, Committee on Temporary Shelter, 179 South Winooski Ave., Burlington, VT 05401.

Mary Ilene Wright

Bristol - Mary Ilene Wright, 92, died Monday, October 2, 2006 in Berkshire Place in Pittsfield, MA.

She was born on October 28, 1913 in Bristol the daughter of Francis S and Anna (Hines) Hannon.

Attended Bristol Public School, graduating from Bristol High School in the class of 1931, Attended the then Castleton Normal School in the two years teacher preparedness program, graduating in 1933. Later earned her BA in Education equivalent in Vermont Education Department sponsored program.

Mrs. Wright taught in the Bristol Elementary and Junior High School for over 35 years and retired from the Mountain Street Elementary School in 1975. After retiring from teaching she worked for several years as a guide at the Shelburne Museum. She was long time member of and active in St Ambrose Parish in Bristol. She also was a participant in other local community organizations and activities.

Except for the period 1936 – 37 when she lived in Claremont, NH, she lived in her home at 12 Church St. Bristol from 1929 to 1998 when she moved to Pittsfield, MA, first to an independent living facility and then in 2000 to Berkshire Place, a Pittsfield assisted living / nursing home facility.

For 33 years Mrs. Wright was married to the late Wayland G Wright, who predeceased her in 1968. she is survived by their four children and spouses, son Gordon and wife Carol of Berw2yn, PA. daughter Anne Russo and husband James of Pittsfield, MA, son Richard and wife Margaret of Rutland, VT. And daughter Maureen Houstle and husband John of Brocton, MA. Her brother in law William Wright of Portland, ME, 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, also survive her. She was predeceased by a brother Lawrence Hannon and sister Margaret Hickey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday Oct 11 at 10:a.m. at St Ambrose Church in Bristol. Interment will be in Mt St Joseph Cemetery in Bristol.
