Champlain Valley Equipment, with farm equipment dealerships in Middlebury and St. Albans, Vt., is the recipient of the 2006 Dealership of the Year Award from Farm Equipment magazine.
Champlain Valley Equipment was chosen by a panel of renowned farm equipment experts for their customer service, employee involvement and financial performance during 2005. Nearly 60 dealerships across North America were nominated for the award. Russell Carpenter founded Champlain Valley Equipment in Middlebury, Vt., in 1970 and together with his son Brian Carpenter, general manager, acquired the second location in St. Albans, Vt., in 2005. Today the company employs 50 people in the two locations. Champlain Valley Equipment represents major line ag equipment makers New Holland, Case IH, Kubota and Polaris. It also represents specialty equipment makers Woods, Kuhn Farm Machinery, Pequea Machinery and Stihl. The judging panel included Dr. W. David Downey, director, Center for Agricultural Business, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., Charles R. Glass, chairman emeritus, Farm Equipment Manufacturer's Assn. Dealer Relations Committee, Arlington, Tex., and David R. Parker, vice president, Agribusiness Group, Indianapolis, Ind.
In selecting Champlain Valley Equipment as the Dealership of the Year, the judges noted the dealership's excellence in every phase of its business at both of its Vermont dealerships. One of the judges commenting on the company's selection noted, “Champlain Valley Equipment has demonstrated excellent sales growth - doubled in 3 years - as well as a strong and increasing market share in the areas that it serves. The dealership's major improvements in its facilities and service fleet show its ongoing commitment to customer service. Together with its excellent employee training programs and sharing of operating information with employees on a regular basis, it's no wonder how this dealer is succeeding in a very competitive market.” One of the judges added, “This dealer operated with the third-smallest staff of all the finalists and generated a total sales volume per employee of $363,146 in 2005.”Another commented that, “Customer care means that a well-trained and well-equipped staff can provide everything necessary to get the customer back on the job quickly. This dealer's focus on continuing training for technicians and maintaining its fleet of service vehicles to perform repairs in the field shows that their customer's business is important to them.”
