Panton- william Howard Findersen Sr. (Bill) April 29 1922 to July 27 2006

William Howard Findeisen Sr. (Bill) passed peacefully Thursday evening July 27th at his home in Panton surrounded by his family.

Bill was born to George and Theresa (Koch) Findiesen in New York City on April 29, 1922. At the age of six months the family moved to Wycoff, New Jersey, summering at their home in North Hero Vermont where Bill’s love for Lake Champlain began.

He graduated from Ramsey High School with the Class of 1940. Upon completion he worked with Wright’s Aeronautical. With the outbreak of World War II Bill very proudly enlisted in the army serving under General Patton in the European Theater and then going to the Pacific Theater as a Lieutenant in the 750th Engineering Heavy Shop Company.
When the war ended Bill attended University of Vermont and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture. From 1950-1957 he worked with the Niagra Chemical Company as a salesman. In 1957 he purchased Yankee Kingdom Orchard, on the shores of beautiful Lake Champlain, from the Loomis Family and shortly after purchased Shadow Glen Orchard from the Cochran Family also on the lake. This is where he later built the home he was to retire in.
With both orchards Bill began his long, successful and passionate career as an orchardist fully utilizing his training from the Army, his education at UVM and his love of nature which now surrounded him. Through his skilled hands he made the land more beautiful and productive. As an apple grower he produced some of the finest apples in the region and was very involved in organizations instrumental to agriculture regionally and nationally including: International Apple Institute, New England Apple Council, National Council of Agricultural Employers, Vermont Marketing Board, Vermont Fruit Tree Growers and Aviation Owner and Pilots Association He was also a member of the American Legion Vergennes Post #14 and former member of the VFW.

Throughout his life as an apple grower Bill embraced all that it had to bring. He traveled extensively in USA and in Europe.  He was an avid skier and in his 50’s he jumped into a Nastar race course in Wyoming and won the Master’s class. He loved to fly his planes and when he couldn’t fly any more he pursued motorcycle riding with the same zeal. He explored the Grand Canyon flying and then later with a notable nine day river trip on the Colorado with Marlene and special friends. His greatest loves were his family, Lake Champlain, working his land and being surrounded by nature and all of her animals: the foxes, deer, turkeys, woodland birds and eagles. May you always soar high above the land with obituaries continued from page 15the eagles.
