Marie E. Rhodes

LincolN—  Marie E. Rhodes 75 died Tuesday June 27, 2006 at the home of Kirk and Linda Roscoe.

She was born May 4, 1931 in Lincoln the daughter of Franklin and Ida (Cram) Thompson.

She enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports, swimming at Garland’s Bridge, scrabble, crossword puzzles, making donuts for Lincoln Fire Department, favorite pastime was spending time looking at the river and Mt. Abraham.

Predeceased by her husband Hobart Rhodes in 1979.

Marie is survived by four children, Ronald and Chere Rhodes of East Middlebury; Debra and Robert Lucia of Lincoln; Marilyn and Ralph Dragon of East Middlebury; Jayne and Raymond Cousino of Lincoln; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three brothers Edward Thompson of Lincoln; Marvin Thompson of Phoenix, Arizona; Frederick Thompson of Lincoln; a sister Karlene Gagnon of Schenectady, NY; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her son David Rhodes, two sisters, Gwen Dearborn and Wanda Goodyear, a brother Roger Thompson.

Funeral services were held on Thursday June 29th at Lincoln United Church. Interment in Maple Cemetery in Lincoln. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lincoln Fire Department Lincoln, VT 05443 or Lincoln Little League in care of Lincoln General Store 17 East River Road Lincoln, VT 05443. Brown McClay Funeral Home in Bristol will be in charge of arrangements.

Howard Charles “Charlie” Levarn

Lincoln— Howard Charles “Charlie” Levarn, 83, died at home on Friday, June 30, 2006 surrounded by his loving wife and  their children.

He was born in Monkton on February 23,1923, the son of Shirley and Christine (Buttles) Levarn. Charlie is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Mary (Williams) Levarn and all eight of their children, Robin Levarn and her fiancé Harland Howard of St. Albans; Gena Lavergne of Burlington; Charmaine Levarn of Rutland; Mary Ann Gardner and her fiancé Jim Trievel of Middlebury; Sheila Austin of Middlebury; Patricia Levarn of Brattleboro, Corinne Levarn and her partner Leo Gadwah of Topsham and Charles "Chub" Levarn and his wife Karen of Lincoln.

His wife and family provided around-the-clock vigil at his home where he passed away peacefully. Addison County Home Health and Hospice were supporters.

Charlie is also survived by his sister Ellen (Levarn) Austin of Monroe, New Jersey and brother Richard Levarn of Carmel, Indiana, several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a grandson Tyler Danyow and sister, Eva (Levarn) Bernasconi.

A graduate of Bristol High School in 1942, Charlie was a veteran of World War II. He served in the U. S. Army from 1943 until 1946. Along with classmate Fred Jackman, he fought in the Philippine battles of Leyte Gulf, led by General Douglas MacArthur, and other battles across the Province of Luzon to Manila.

Charlie married Mary Williams of Bristol on July 17, 1948 in Lee, Massachusetts. They lived for a time in Lee, Cambridge and Boston Massachusetts.

He was a member of the Bristol American Legion Post No. 19, the Middlebury Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7823 and the Vergennes Lions Club. Officially retired as a mason in 1985, Charlie continued to do smaller jobs, often assisting his son Chub, who is also a mason. He was especially proud of the work he did on the Veterans Memorial at the Middlebury VFW. As a community service he built the barbecue stand at the Lincoln Recreation Field. He also built memorial sights through out New England.

Charlie is also survived by his grandchildren and great grandchildren; Heather (Belleville) Russell and her daughter Taylor; Tara (Belleville) Kolowich, her husband Hugh and their children, Hugh and Lana, Jamie and Brian Corkins,  Gena Gardner, Heidi Gardner, Faith (Austin) Raymond, her husband Mathew and their daughter Emma Cummings, Gabriel Austin, Bobbie and Michael LaFountain, Joseph Malzac, Jason Haskins,  and Jennifer Haskins.

Charlie Levarn was a modest and caring man. He loved to reminisce with his friends, especially with his buddies at the Legion and VFW. A favorite pastime was hunting and fishing.

Funeral services will be held Thursday July 6, at 11 a.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment well be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Donations may be made to Bristol American Legion Post No.19 or VFW Post 7823 in Middlebury.
