Vergennes Chapter FFA Members Win Honors At Vermont Convention

    Members of the Vergennes Chapter of FFA won many honors at the State FFA Convention held in Colchester, May 24 & 25, 2006. Most will advance to national competitions this fall.

Travis Simpson won the State Star Green Mountain Degree in Agricultural Placement for which he received a plaque and $300 award. This award is sponsored by Dupont Company; USDA Farm Service Agency as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. Travis also won $250 and plaque for winning the State Floriculture Placement Award. Both of these awards will be competing on the national level.

Receiving his Green Mountain Degree and a State Agricultural Mechanics Repair and Maintenance Award was Ben Osicky. The State Ag. Mechanics Design & Fabrication Award was won by Ethan Verburg. Both these members received $250 awards and plaques and will be going on to national competition.

Justin Lalumiere won the FFA Creed Speaking competition. Justin had to memorize, present the FFA Creed and answer questions from a panel of judges. He received a $100 award and will be going on to compete at the national convention in the fall.

The Dairy Cattle Evaluation event was won by Lindi Van De Weert, Nydelis Ortiz-Revera, Zane Leno, and Brendan Pierce. Lindi placed first individual and Nydelis placed third. To win this competition, members had to judge cows placing them based upon conformation, select dairy animals using pedigrees, answer questions about dairy herd management and give a set of oral reasons.

David Hawkins, Garrett Holler, and Mason Evarts won the Agricultural Mechanics Contest. Placing first individually was David, fifth Garrett, and sixth was Mason. Winning this event involved performing a multiple pass “V'” butt weld with an arc welder, cutting plate steel with an Oxi-fuel torch, trouble shooting a small engine, working problems in all areas of mechanics and answering 80 questions. The team members of the dairy and mechanics contests will be representing Vermont this fall at the National Convention to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Ethan Verburg and Travis Van De Weert won the State Tractor Trouble Shooting event held at the Pat Hannaford Career Center the same day. Travis and Ethan had to first complete a written test, then trouble shoot and get started a tractor supplied by Champlain Valley Equipment of Middlebury. Their placing first won them each a $5000 scholarship to North Western Ohio University.

Placing second in extemporaneous speaking was Kyle Korth and third in dairy handling was Joe Marszalkowski.
