Heritage Photo Collection Going on Sale

Tuesday June 6, 2006

The Otter Creek History Club is proud to announce that the photo exhibition created this year is going on sale at the Bixby Library from June 3- June 10th using a silent auction format. The collection includes over fifty images that include vintage photos of Vergennes and the five surrounding towns in the 1800's and early 1900's. Added to these wonderful images are twenty plus images created by the members of the history club around the theme of " Heritage". The proceeds from this sale will be used to fund future endeavors of the Otter Creek Basin History Club. The students would like to thank the Friends of the Bixby Library for allowing the sale to be conducted in the library.

The Otter Creek History Club is comprised of over 40 students in grades 7-12 in the Vergennes, Middlebury and Mt. Abe school districts. The club meets monthly to explore history topics that include oral interviews, archeological digs, artifact identification, and topics of interest. The group annually selects and competes in writing, dramatic and speaking contests tied to history and the preservation of local history. In 2005 the group won state championships in five speech contests, seven writing contests, and three dramatic presentations. The group also created a 100-page booklet of histories and local stories, as well as the photography exhibits now on sale. Three history club members also were awarded national speech titles, while others are currently involved in writing and filming twenty-minute video documentaries on the history of Otter Creek and different buildings on Main Street in Vergennes. Additional activities of the group include performances at local elementary schools, nursing homes and upon requests for classroom teachers. Five history club members were just a part of the Memorial Day assembly at both VUHS and VUES.

"We are excited about this sale, " remarked student history club co-president Alexandra Larrow. " There are so many different projects that we are planning, that it is necessary for us to have a fund base to draw from. The vintage photos were provided for us by local historians Bob & Ellie Mitchell and are a centerpiece of what we use when we share local history stories with students around the area. This sale will enable us to diversify even more and create a wider base of involvement for local students.
