Clark O. Atkins

Lincoln— Clark O. Atkins, 92, died Sunday, April 30, 2006 at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

He was born on April 7, 1914 in Lincoln the son of Olin and Leta (Clark) Atkins.

Clark attended the Lincoln United Church. He served in the U.S Army during WWII. He was a life time member of the Bristol American Legion Post #19.

Clark married Elizabeth Ladue in 1946.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Elizabeth (Libby) Atkins of Lincoln, three sons, Roger and his wife Beverly Atkins of Colchester, Reginald Atkins of PA., Jody and his wife Wanda Atkins of NY., five grandchildren, one great grandson, two step daughters Hazel and her husband Lawrence Grace of Bristol, Deanna and her husband Bill Steadman of Vergennes, eight step grandchildren, 14 step great grandchildren, two half sisters Sharon Phelps of Bristol, Corrine Atkins of Huntington, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 4 at the Lincoln United Church. Interment will be in Maple Cemetery in Lincoln. Contributions may be made to the Bristol Rescue Squad, Bristol 05443.

Dorotha Edwards Gioria

Hinesburg— Dorotha  Edwards Gioria, died April 29, 2006.  Dorotha was born on March 6, 1911, she graduated from Spaulding High School in 1929 and the University of Vermont in 1933 where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.  She shared her love of learning while teaching high school in Hinesburg, Williamstown, and Spaulding in Barre, VT.

While active as a leader in Brownie and Girl Scout organizations, she was instrumental in starting the Brownie Day Camp and Sky Acres Girl Scout Camp in Washington, VT.  She also served on the New England Girl Scout Council.  She was also a correspondent for the Barre Daily Times covering the Barre Town Selectmen’s meetings.  She also was a member of Eastern Star and held many offices.

She was constantly reading and loaning out her numerous collection of best sellers with family and friends.  She kept in touch with her friends and just this March celebrated her 95th birthday hearing from over 90 of them.

She and her husband, Mac Gioria, shared nearly 58 years of marriage.  Their children, Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Comtois, Robert (Bob) Gioria, and Mrs. Irwin (Betty)  Brent of Weybridge were fortunate to enjoy their sense of humor and joie de vivre.  Gram and Gramp were loving examples to their grandchildren, Jim Comtois, Jean Comtois Illingworth, Dr. Jeff Brent and Dr. Meredith Brent.  Dot and Mac also had five great- grands.

The graveside service was held on Friday, May 5 at the Wilson Cemetery in Lower Websterville with Rev. Collins presiding.  At the request of the family, contributions in her name may be sent to the Websterville Baptist Church, Upper Websterville, VT 05678.

John (Dick) Haigis Sr.

Ferrisburgh— John (Dick) Haigis Sr. 78 died Thursday May 4, 2006 at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

He was born November 25, 1927 in York, Maine the son of Frederick and Ruth (Weaver) Haigis.

Dick was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Vergennes, and Sigma Phi Society at University of Vermont. Also, he served in the Korean War and retired as Colonel U.S. Army Engineer Corps and former Company & Battalion Commander VT Army National Guard. He was a past member of South Burlington VT Planning Commission and Ferrisburgh Zoning Board.

Dick is survived by his wife Anna M. Haigis of Ferrisburgh; five children, Carol and Bill Heise of Burlington; Rick Haigis and Amy VanDoren of Salem, Mass; Jack Haigis of New York; Kurt and Kimberly Haigis of Ferrisburgh; Heidi Haigis of California; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Joanne Haigis of Shelburne.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday May 15th at St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Vergennes. Interment will be in North Ferrisburgh Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Lung Association of Vermont 30 Farrell St.  South Burlington, VT 05403. Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes will be in charge of arrangements.
