Virginia Phelps Gile

Richmond— Virginia Phelps Gile passed away peacefully on Monday, April 10, 2006, after several years of declining health at the Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.

She was born April 7, 1920 in West Lebanon, NH, the daughter of Edwin H. and Helen E. (Barrows) Phelps.  She grew up in West Hartland and Windsor. She graduated from Windsor High School and from Mary Fletcher School of nursing with her RN degree in 1943.

Virginia married Homer L. Gile on August 4, 1943 in Windsor.  Homer predeceased her November 9, 1998.

She was a member of the Richmond Congregational Church, Friendship Chapter #17 Order of the Eastern Star and Mary C Burdick Chapter #6 Order of the Eastern Star.  She enjoyed sewing, knitting and serving as a 4H leader, teaching many young women in Richmond how to sew. Virginia worked many years at Contel and GTE Telephone Companies in Richmond.  She and Homer enjoyed their retirement years with travel and spending winters in Florida.

Virginia is survived by her four sons; Larry K. and his wife Donna of Bristol, Dennis L. and his wife Sherry of Richmond, Bradley K. and his wife Barbara of Starksboro, and Bryant K. of Richmond.  Bryant’s wife Judith passed away November 13, 2005. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; Carl and Theresa and their children Colby and Madison, Neil Gile and his wife Suzanna, Veronica Paquette and her husband Ken, their children Dylan, Jared and Isaac, Melinda Johnston and her husband Doug, their children Joshua and Kelsey, Norma Jean Gile, Lorelei Ferre and her husband Scot, Martha Muster and her husband Daniel, their daughter Lydia, Loretta Gile, step granddaughters Heather Riley and Pam Bergeron. She is also survived by her brother Kenneth H. Phelps and his wife Ada of Manlius, NY her sister Jeanne Porter of Williston and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the Brownway Residence staff for the care she received for the last several years and most recently at the home of Judy Hill, Monkton. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Mary Dill, Dr. Kevin Mulholland, the VNA of Chittenden County, Addison County Home Health and the staff of Porter Medical Center for her medical care.

Calling hours were at the Gifford Funeral Home, Richmond, Wednesday, April 12, 2006. An Eastern Star service was held. Funeral services were held at the Richmond Congregational Church, Thursday, April 13, 2006. Interment was followed at the Riverview Cemetery, Richmond. Homer Joseph Hamel Jr.

Vergennes— Homer Joseph Hamel Jr. age 77 passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, April 7, 2006.

He was born October 11, 1928 the son of Alice (Clark) and Homer Hamel Sr.

Homer married the love of his life Edna Mulliss on October 25, 1952. They lived most of their life in Vergennes, where they raised their six children. Homer enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 19; he was honorably discharged and went on to spend 23 years as a member of the Vermont Army National Guard. Homer would call those years some of the most memorable in his life. Homer worked as an Electroplater at G.E. in Burlington and Simmond's Precision where he retired in 1990. He had a love for life, enjoying time spent hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Homer was an avid story teller, sharing his life's experiences. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and was loved and enjoyed by all that knew him. He was a member of St. Peter's Parish in Vergennes and the American Legion Post #14 in Vergennes.

Homer is survived by his children and their spouses, Plumia and David Audette of Port Charlotte, FL., Horace and Jody Richards of Addison, John and Rosie Hamel of New Haven. Valerie and Ed Hanson of Bristol, Tina and Roger Regnaud of Vergennes, Homer (Jay) Hamel and Lisa Sprague of Addison, 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, sister Ruby Torrey of Conn. and special friends Dick and Nancy Daniels. Homer was predeceased by his wife Edna on February 14, 2005, grandson Shawn and 3 brothers Hover, Bill and Leonard.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Tuesday April 11 th at St. Peter's Church in Vergennes. A graveside service was held on Thursday April 20th at Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes. There were no public calling hours. Contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, Route 7 Middlebury, VT 05753 or Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, Box 11 Vergennes, VT 05491. Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes are in charge of arrangements.
