The Second Annual Young Artists Showcase Comes to MUHS on April 8. It's the one night of the year when our best music students get the chance to strut their stuff. Hand-picked by area music teachers, the more than two dozen accomplished performers will sing, dance, and play a variety instruments, with a level of poise and prof-essionalism that reflects years of practice.

Town Hall Theater executive director Douglas Anderson explains the origins of the show.  "High school athletes get a lot of recognition and a lot of press, and that's wonderful, but we've always felt that exceptional high school musicians never get the chance to show the community what they can do.  Before they leave for college we think they should have a chance to shine in a big public way."

"I also think that seeing these highly-accomplished kids on stage, getting huge applause and loving what they do - well, I think that is really motivational for children who are just beginning to study music."

This year's showcase features pianists Hilary Hammond, Brian Maier and TimWoos; cellist Joshua Morris; guitarists Dewey Dunnington, Maria Santiago and Wylla Saunders-Vestrich; drummer Gabe Enslein; and vocalists Christopher Colmenero, Kari Grunberg, Selina Hurley, Geoffrey Penar, Caroline Thompsonand Andrea Tomasi.

Two dance groups are on the bill.  Tristan Bartsch and Sonia Hare will perform a piece choreographed by Patty Smith, and the MUHS Dance Team will mix it up with some electrifying hip-hop dancing.

Invited back for a second year is violinist Estlin Usher.  "Estlin played an extremely difficult Fritz Kreisler piece last year that knocked our socks off," says Anderson.   "He has astonishing technique, and he plays with this electrifying passion.  I was so impressed that I created a Director's Award so we can invite a stand-out performer like Estlin to come back to the showcase every year for an encore performance."

The Young Artist Showcase will be presented at the Middlebury Union High School auditorium on Saturday, April 8, at 8 pm.  Tickets are $8 adults, $4 for children 12 and under, and may be purchased by calling 382-9222. Tickets will also be available at the door.

"This isn't just a good concert by some high school kids," says Anderson. "It's simply a great concert by any standard, and anyone who loves music and performance is going to have a great time."
