The Vergennes indoor track team had a successful day when they attended the state meet. First, the boys 4x800 team won their race, giving Vergennes their first medal of the day. The members of the relay, juniors Corey Melnick, and Joe Carter, along with seniors Theo Spencer and Mike Sorrell ran their way to victory with a time of  8:38.45. Later that day, Theo Spencer flew past the competition and won a second event. This time, it was the 3200 meters, 2 mile. His time was 9:58.48. Teammate Joe Carter was able to catch a third place in the 1000 meter race, with a time of 2:50.79. The boys team came in 6th place overall. As for the girls, their 4x800 relay did their school proud. They came in second place. Their relay team consisted of freshmen Julie Edwards, Avery Cook and Janah Hammach, and junior Liz Lowe. Their time was 10:46.56. Julie Edwards also ran, and did well in the 3200 meters. She came in third with a time of 12:45.02. Avery Cook came in third as well, this time in the 1000 meters. It was a close race, as the second place went to junior Kate Leugers of Rice. Leugers time was 3:23.10. Clearly, very little separated these two talented runners. The girls team came in 7th place overall. The Commodores should be very proud of these athletes. While at the meet, I was very impressed with the ability and spirit of this team. While their teammates were racing, these athletes and supporters lined the track in support of their peers. This meet was a joy to watch, and I’m sure next year will bring just as many wins.
