Beeman Students Blend Art And Heart Through Activism

Tuesday April 17, 2018

By Cookie Steponaitis

Beeman Elementary School art teacher Eileen Gombosi has a passion for art and student activism and blending the two into artistic projects with a purpose is something which Gombosi feels brings to her students the ability to make a difference at a young age. Recently these passions combined into a repurposing project where Beeman 5th & 6th grade artists transformed old chairs and desks into stunning pieces of art reflecting the culture of Puerto Rico. In the process of being auctioned off, the pieces are on sale for a reasonable price and a great cause. All proceeds raised will be sent to benefit communities in Puerto Rico still struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria more than a year ago.
“Student are on fire for this project,” shared Beeman art teacher Eileen Gombosi. “They researched the culture, animals and music of Puerto Rico and each group has created their own design. With their social studies teacher Annette Carter they even wrote a story about a girl named Maria and the impact of the hurricane on her life on the island. They are so excited to make a difference and feel empowered that even at their age they can help others through their own efforts.” Currently, the online auction is up and active and will run for another week or so. People wanting to purchase these one of a kind masterpieces made with heart, love and empathy can go to the auction website to place a bid at https://www.32auctions.com/PaintingforPuertoRico.
The chairs and desks will be on exhibit on 7:30 p.m. in the Beeman Town Hall during a Naturalization Ceremony. If you have questions or want to make an appointment to see the pieces during the regular school day please call (802)453-2331. “Beeman Elementary is a special place to work,” concluded art teacher Eileen Gombosi. “This project is just one of many that let the students’ creativity and efforts impact others.” Gombosi and all the students are hoping their art from the heart will also touch others and the auction will finish with every piece sold and the maximum possible in contributions can flow from them to counterparts in Puerto Rico. So before the auction closes down go on and place a bid and you will own a piece the 5th & 6th graders heart and will be impacting change to a region of the world still struggling to have the basic daily needs of life including water, electricity and basic needs.
