TaeKwon Do KICKS Break-a-Thon Fundraiser

Tuesday April 10, 2018

During the week of March 19th, students of TaeKwon Do KICKS from Hinesburg, Shoreham, Orwell, Middlebury and Vergennes locations participated in a Break-a-Thon Fundraiser.  About 150 students ranging from preschoolers through adults, broke boards to earn their pledges.  KICKS students raised $6500, which is being donated to TJ Duncanson Scholarship, Derick Leroy Benoit Scholarship and to the Kelley Palmer family.  This is an event Master Kellie Thomas (5th degree black belt and owner of KICKS) organizes yearly to help students understand that as TaeKwon Do students they have a greater responsibility to the community and people around them.  Master Thomas likes to remind them that they are "heroes" in their own right and are supposed to protect and take care of people who need help - whether it be on the playground from bullies, from harassment at the work place or home, or raise money to help local charities.
KICKS was also fortunate to have support from local businesses who donated at least $100 to help us reach our goal - Taylor Rental of Middlebury, Louis R. Provencher Earthworks of Addison, Indulge Salon of Middlebury, and Michael Languasco  (branch manager) Movement Mortgage of   Burlington.
TJ Duncanson Scholarship
The Duncanson family will be awarding 8-10 scholarships to 5 High Schools in June this year in Memory of their son TJ Duncanson. TJ would be a Senior at Middlebury Union High School and he was always giving to others. All 4 High Schools in Addison County and Springfield VT are the High Schools that the Duncanson’s have chosen to give to. TJ attended Elementary school in Springfield and stayed in contact with friends there. TJ was an amazing young man who put others feelings before his own, he may not have liked to me touched or hugged but he gave “AMAZING” hugs and his smile could brighten your day. Unfortunately he hid his pain and depression until he could not hide or live with it anymore. So in memory of TJ 8-10 Students will receive $200-$250 towards college or technical school!
Derick Leroy Benoit Scholarship
Derick was a 2012 VUHS graduate.  He loved his family & friends more than anything.  He was always looking to help others in any way he could.  He had an amazing ability to put a smile on your face even in the toughest of times.  Derick loved football and to be physically fit.  Although, he struggled with the day to day operations of school in general, he wanted nothing more than to receive his high school diploma at graduation.  Through perseverance and the help of many of his teachers, classmates, family & friends Derick did just this.  He was so proud of this achievement.  In August of 2015 Derick took his own life due to depression.  We, his family and friends want to help keep his amazing spirit alive by, helping a deserving graduate at VUHS move forward with their goals and dreams.
Izzy & Kelley Palmer
The Hinesburg Girl Scout troop #30463 would like you to join us in supporting one of our own. Our sweet 5-year-old Daisy scout, Izzy Palmer, lost her dad to colon and liver cancer on February 1st.  As a troop we would like to show Izzy and her mom Kelley support during this difficult time. Izzy is in Kindergarten at HCS, she loves unicorns, stuffed animals, reading and crafts. She also enjoys playing outside and going on walks and hikes with her mom.
