While most of Addison County was glued to their television sets seeing whether Tom Brady could pull out a fourth quarter win and take his team to their 10th Super Bowl, some other young ladies were working towards dreams of their own. Cheerleading is in the blood in ANWD and for generations there has been a reason to cheer! Like any other successful sports program, the answer to where the state champions of the future come from is very simple. They start young and they simply love what they do.
Hosting a youth cheerleading clinic at VUHS, the VUHS Varsity cheerleading team and coach Jennifer Urban opened up the gym to over thirty young cheerleaders who had three common denominators. First, most of them are younger siblings of cheerleaders or attend Commodore Basketball games not only to see great basketball, but to watch champion cheerleaders. Second, most of the attending young girls love to dance, leap and tumble, all components of cheerleading. Lastly, all have dreams of someday being on the Varsity team, just like their teenage instructors of the day are now. Coach Urban looked around the gym and grinned, “We had such a great time with the minis today, she shared. “I do see some future Varsity cheerleaders in this bunch.”
When it is mentioned that the Commodore cheerleading program is generations deep it is simply a statement of fact. Varsity Coach Urban and JV Coach LaBerge are both former members of the VUHS teams and grew up in cheerleading under former coaches. Being a part of a tight knit group of athletes is more than just a winter pastime. Friends throughout the year, there are gatherings, work sessions and while the athletes may participate in other sports and seasons, winter is reserved for cheerleading.  When the alumni game is played and former cheerleaders return for the event there is no shortage of flipping, tossing, jumping and a powerful presence of spirit and entertainment. Even for the graduates and past cheerleaders, the sport is still a part of their lives and fond memories from high school and competition.
February and early March are competition months and soon signs will be up all over the county for dance teams, cheerleading teams and winter basketball and hockey teams. What ever your school colors, whatever your evening plans, take the time to go to a sporting event, wear your colors proudly and yell for your team. While the Super Bowl is watched by millions, the hearts of these young athletes are just as invested and proud with their home sports and competitions. Be a proud spectator and show all the Addison County athletes we do have something to cheer about! Winter sports are hot!
