Tigers Stun Sea Horses in Burlington 19-14

Tuesday October 17, 2017

By Mike Cameron

The Tigers were burned on the opening kick-off as Ryan Mitchel romped 80-yards to the 12 and Kevin Garrison scampered in for the first touchdown of the game. The P.A.T. was missed and BHS was up 6-0 in the first minute of the contest.  It was gut-check time for the Tigers and they responded with a calm and determined aggressiveness on both sides of the ball.
It took a Tiger fumble in the Red Zone and a huge stop of Sea Horse fullback Manny Dodson by Lane Sheldrick on a 4th and goal from the 2 to lite the Tigers fire. Middlebury took over on downs and crafted their best drive of the year moving from their own 2-yard line to the Sea Horse end-zone.  Quarderback Cody Pomainville executed the tripple option out of a tight wishbone to perfection with Tyler Hotte plowing over and through the BHS defense and Sheldrick slashing off tackle in true Tiger fashion.  With first and goal at the 4-yard line, the Tigers were called for a motion penalty and moved back to the  9.  Then it was Hotte, Hotte and more Hotte for the touchdown and a 6-6 tie with the early moments of the second quarter ticking away.  The Tiger extra point kick was missed for the first time this year but Middlebury had sent their message loud and clear.
Kevin Garrison is a great athlete. He was contained but not stopped by the Tigers in this one but BHS quarterback Gunner Bierbaum was constantly harassed by a fired-up Tiger pass rush led by senior Jack Deppman, sophomore Cam Devlin, and his brother Skyeler Devlin.  It was Garrison's amazing punting that kept the Tigers bottled up at their end for a time in the first half but they held on and played error free football then got that huge 98-yard TD drive of their own.  It was 6-6 at half time.
In the second half the Tigers took the third quarter kick off and went right down and scored. Sheldrick and Hotte led the charge and Pomainville added some key third down runs to move the markers.Hotte plowed through the middle at the 10:00 minute mark and scored.  A two-point conversion was added and the Tigers led 13-6.  There would be more.
Leading 13-6 in the 4th quarter, Middlebury added another score at 8:09 when Pomainville threw a pin point 9-yard pass to Sheldrick at the left pylon for a score and added the two point conversion.  Now the Tigers had a solid 19-6 advantage but the Sea horses would make the rest of the game a nail biter.
A BHS blocked punt gave the Sea Horses possession at the Tiger 28-yard line and they made good on the forced turnover.  Dodson scored from the one after Garrison was forced out on the previous play and the holder Ryan Miller scored on a fake extra point kick, run, to make it 19-14.  BHS had some time outs but Middlebury would be able to keep possession on the ensuing kick off and run out the clock for a monster win on the road at Burlington.  The Tigers are now 4-3 and will play CVU this Saturday afternoon at Hinesburg in their final game of the regular season looking for an even better post-season seed.
