More Than The Numbers Meet CPA Betty Sabourin

It was August of 1986 when Betty Sabourin began her career with numbers. While she had always been good at math in school, the idea of accounting or a career working with the public and taxes never occurred to her. Sabourin had operated a Day Care, worked for what was at the time Simmonds Precision and cleaned homes, before fate and interest intervened.  “I opened up the Community College of Vermont Course list and began looking at possibilities. I had always done well in math at school, so I picked accounting and started. It was very intimidating to be 29 and having to learn how to study all over again. I had my ‘deer in the headlights look’ and it took me a while to settle in, but I was determined.”
At the same time, fate came into play through the form of a phone call from friend Noela Brunet. She got her taxes done with Irene Thomas and heard there was an opening. Betty applied for the job and came up with other applicants to a tax school hosted by business owner Irene Thomas and MaryAnn Hastings. At the end of a week-long school Sabourin remembers saying to the owner, “if you hire me you won’t be sorry.” Thomas did and as Sabourin predicted, she was never sorry. It was the beginning of a life-long friendship and Sabourin keep learning and growing. First with her Enrolled Agent completion in 1992 and her Certified Public Accounting license in October 2005.
While Sabourin will be celebrating her 10th year at her office location of 103 Crosby Heights in Vergennes, 2017 actually marks her 31st year in the business of working with numbers and people.  A member of the Vermont Tax Practitioner Association and the National Association of Tax Practitioners, Sabourin thinks the readers might be surprised to learn that the tax codes are not black and white. There are many shades of gray and there are specifics that are not spelled out to the last letter of possibilities. Sabourin is aware that many Addison County residents dread taxes and have their own ‘deer in the headlight’ moment when they think about the IRS, taxation codes or even filing their state tax. Always one to talk with her customers and make certain they understand what is going on, Sabourin is known for making the impossible to read or comprehend into terms and ways each customer can understand and use to plan for their specific needs.
The Valley Voice salutes Betty Sabourin for her 31 years of working with people, numbers and the often mind-boggling process of tax preparation. Betty works with her son Daniel Sabourin and shares office space with Mary Ann Hastings. Please stop on by 103 Crosby Heights or give her a call at (802) 877-6777. Sabourin’s business is open 9:00 am-5:00 pm Monday- Friday and offers tax preparation and planning, bookkeeping and payroll services.
