What do bananas, lime green, wildflowers and coffee in bed have to do with a successful marriage? The answer is rooted in family, fun and forty-four years of happy partnership. Meet Walter and Mary Ann Deverell.
The couple met at a motel where Walter worked as a night auditor and Mary Ann worked as a hostess. Every morning as Walter was leaving she was coming in and a smile led to a date and then things just progressed from there. They were married in 1973 in Burlington, Vermont by a Justice of the Peace and have lived in Addison County all their married life and simply love it.  Children Adam and Rebecca and grandchildren Grace, Jack and Eve complete Team Deverell and bring together all of the corners of the couple’s life. “We lived in South Burlington, Morrisville, Panton and now Middlebury,” shared Mary Ann. “We love Vermont and Addison County. After our children graduated from VUHS we moved to Middlebury in 1994. We love being part of this special community. I have worked at Addison Central School and Mary Hogan School for over twenty five years and Walter has been a CPA for forty two years. We both volunteer at The Town Hall Theater and attend CVUUS.”      With so many happy memories connected to Addison County it is hard for Walter and Mary Ann to select favorite family times. Whether it is watching their grandchildren thrive at the annual Middlebury Festival on the Green, run track at Middlebury College, swim in the pool or explore paths and shops, the Deverell’s work on a simple and solid philosophy. “Our advice for young couples is to always be kind and gentle with each other. It’s the little things that grow the relationship,” concluded Mary Ann. “Walter brings me coffee in bed.  I search for lime green, (his favorite color!) things for him. He brings home wildflowers he picked for me on his walk home from the office. I cut his bananas for his cereal. I get really excited when I unexpectedly run into Walter in town.”
With summer in full swing and all the spectacular and fun local events to choose from, come and see what are some of the simple thing that keep summer a season of celebration and love affairs like the Deverell’s going strong. The Valley Voice salutes all couples and their unique and special ways of making the years not about items acquired but the memories made.
