Fishing was the name of the game this past weekend and Vergennes was the epicenter of magical moments. The 34th Annual Vergennes Junior Fishing Derby achieved its goals of bringing families together to fish and teaching the next generation to fish and then some. From 5 am-9pm on both Friday, June 23rd and Friday, June 24th hundreds came and did just that. Featuring lots of activities, events and even a Karaoke Dance Party, people came to eat, fish and learn. Let’s Go Fishing workshops, Make Your Own Lure, Freshwater Fishing Games, Free BBQ, and much more special events added to an event already festive.
Saturday evening the falls were lit and a Street Dace with Twist of Fate made the conclusion of the two days memorable. Prizes and an ice cream party followed by the Awards Ceremony completed the weekend. People won great prizes like a four-hour fishing charter on Lake Champlain and a Vermont Teddy Bear Fishing Bear. Awards were presented to Axl Paquette for his non-game 17 lb. Sheepshead and to Ella Maneen for a game fish small mouth bass 19’’ 3.47 pound
Event chairperson Martha Sullivan DeGraaf shared, “Despite the rain, heat and high water, 225 kids fished during the 2017 Derby. A total of 125 fish were caught. The Derby is put on by the City of Vergennes, but would not be possible without our sponsors, especially our Champ sponsors, The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 14, and the Addison County Eagles Aerie 3801.”
