Obituaries 2-13-17

ROGER JOSEPH DESABRAIS SR.

   Roger Joseph Desabrais Sr., age 76, longtime resident since 1948 of Salisbury, VT, passed away February 5, 2017at The University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT. He was born April 27, 1940 in Proctor, VT to Moses and Julia (Ladouceur) Desabrais.
   Roger, with his family, established R J Desabrais & Sons Glass Services in 1980. He was a selfless, hard working man whose attitude and commitment to family was the direct result to his success. Roger also had a great passion for hard work and detail which could be seen in his restoration of his antique cars and other countless projects. He was a man who left a profound impact on all the people he met. He was always a man of his word and believed that a handshake was worth more than any written contract. He possessed great respect, strength, determination and integrity. Of his many accomplishments attained, he was most proud to be a husband of 55 years, father, grandfather, great grandfather and special uncle. Besides his family, he also had a love of gardening,  yard work,  his John Deere lawn equipment and travel including countless cruises and destinations traveling as far away as Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, England, Scotland, China and South East Asia.
   Roger served in the United States Army from 1959-1964 and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 27. He was profoundly proud to be a Veteran having served his country. Roger was also a member of the Middlebury Lions Club for 44 years and received the Melvin Jones Fellow award for his countless hours of service and support he gave his community.
    Survivors include his loving wife Joanne (Gagnon) of Salisbury, VT; sons Roger J. Desabrais Jr. (Karen) of Whiting, VT, Todd A. Desabrais (Mary) of East Middlebury, VT; brothers Lucien R. Desabrais of Salisbury, VT, Moses E. Desabrais (Anne) of Middlebury, VT; grandchildren Joseph (Krista), Paul (Lilah), Matthew (Kayla), Darren, Kyle, Connor Desabrais; great grandchildren Hannah, Hillary, Hayden, Emelia Desabrais; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Roger was predeceased by a brother Norman L. Desabrais; sisters Jeannette Cole-Rowe and Rose Marie Wakefield; and sister in law Thea Desabrais.
     A mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 326 College St., Middlebury, Friday, February 10, 2017.  Rev. William Beaudin officiated.  
A reception was held at the American Legion Hall on Wilson Road.
Burial will take place at a later date in the spring at West Side Cemetery in Salisbury, VT.   In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Homeward Bound,
236 Boardman St., Middlebury, VT 05753 or to the charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson-Ducharme Funeral Home.
