Learning about someone's business is always a special privilege.  Sharing a conversation with owners and staff about what they do at their job and how they feel about what they do can make for some interesting reading.  John Wallace, the owner of Autumn Gold Jewelry on Main Street in Middlebury makes this process happen with ease.
Since 1998 John and his wife Margaret have owned the store.  Autumn Gold has evolved into one of the most service oriented and welcoming custom jewelry stores to be found anywhere.  It starts with John's personality. “We are truly honored to have you as a customer.”  This Certified Gemologist means what he says and it shows.  Autumn Gold Jewelry takes the extra care that will make a lasting impression.
“We take it seriously, we wouldn't be here without them,” John explains referring to his customers, many of whom have been friends of the store since day one.  The variables involved in forming a lasting relationship with a jewelry customer have to be based on knowledge, skill and trust.  All three are abundantly on display at this establishment, along with an amazing repository of artistry and creativity.
“We have a great staff,” John explains further, they listen and learn every day.  With each customer it's personal.  There is an emotion that customers want to express and we are here to help them do that.”
This process could involve a sketch, a special setting, special tools and the individual experience and knowledge of the designer.
“This is the most well equipped small shop that I've ever worked with,” Jeff, one of the designers on staff told the Voice during our recent visit.  Jeff, Josh, the two Dave’s, Sierra and Kathy all share in a collective enthusiasm for the store and its mission. “Everyone is working for the customer,” John adds.
Today's retail marketplace is highly competitive.  The advent of shopping “On-Line,” adds further velocity to the process.  At Autumn Gold, they still take the time to get it right as they help you make your ideas and emotions a reality with a unique, one of a kind creation for that special someone you had in mind.  Visit the store and talk to a talented and experienced goldsmith.
And yes they do have a strong Internet presence.  The Autumn Gold Facebook page is alive with likes.
Special events are scheduled here and positive customer comments are plentiful.  Many comment about the creative process and how much they enjoy working with John and his staff.    Reading some of the comments might give some of you and idea or two and a reason to make a future visit.
John says the nineteen years since he and Margaret started the business have passed very fast indeed.  The store has become the personal jeweler and designer for hundreds of satisfied customers.  That experience is waiting for you at 61 Main Street in Middlebury Vermont.  You can call them at (802) 388-6788 and find them on the web at autumngoldjewelry.com. Like them on Facebook and remember they help you discover “The earth's most beautiful gifts.”
