Do you ever stop and wonder what happened to the class couples who started dating in high school or even middle school and were together when graduation occurred? Some attend high school reunions just to find out what happened to those couples while others scoff at the possibility of a high school romance holding on for generations but there is a part in each of us that gets sentimental around special holidays that believe in the school days’ romances. Love makes us hope for the best and as luck would have it, Addison County is full of people who said, “I love you” back in school and still mean it as much today.
One such couple is Scott Grant and Betsy Haven who met in French class in high school and truth be told Scott signed up because Betsy was taking the class. “She was pretty, smart and smiley,” recounts Scott Grant. “My first impression of him,” reminisces Betsy, “was a shy smile and cute man with curly hair and big glasses.” While the pair dated other people, it was the senior year that brought them together and set the course for Valentine’s Days to come.
Betsy and her family are avid skiers and it was Betsy who took Scott skiing for the first time. “On the chairlift he was a bit anxious,” chuckled Betsy. “Of course, I made it swing just to rattle him a little bit more. We loved to ski at Bolton Valley and once we were married we took our girls to Cochran’s where they could really learn to ski on used skis and with a built-in bunny hill.” Betsy and Scott will celebrate thirty three years of marriage this June and their family grew to include daughters Lindsy, Kristen and son Kyle. Over the years the family has spent many weekends and even an occasional Valentine’s Day on the slopes.
When asked to share how the relationship stands up to time both Grant’s felt that it had to do with communication. “Take time to listen to each other,” shared the couple. “Make sure to connect a little each day and take time for dates even when life gets busy. That’s when it’s even more important. Surprise one another once in a while! And dates don’t have to be fancy; they can just be at home with a candle at dinner and putting on a favorite movie.”
As Valentine’s Day approaches and sends people out searching for the perfect gift for their loved one, the advice from happily married couples who got together way back in the day is simple. Talk more, grow together and spend time with each other, for it warms the heart and cements the relationship more than the gift or meal. Valentine’s Day is any day, year and season where the first ingredient is real love.
