Members of the Red Clover Kids program met with their mentors recently at the Echo Science Center in Burlington and explored the creative and enticing exhibits included in the museum. The youth between the ages of 5-12 were paired up with a young woman each from the Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization and explored shipwrecks, filmed weather forecasts, learned about the building talents of the tree frog and spent the afternoon together.
“Red Clover Kids is a mentorship program sponsored by MVSO,” shared co-director Alayna Westcom.  “We establish friendships with the young people in the program and work with them the whole year to strengthen interests, foster new career possibilities and help them grow and be proud of themselves.” Each participant in the program will meet a minimum of five times with their mentee spending time at selected locations that allow play, exploration, fun and growth. Some of the mentee/mentor relationships have continued for several years and are as close as siblings. Being a big sister to a younger brother or sister is part of being involved in helping and inspiring the next generation and with locations on the horizon including fun with Teddy Bears, lessons in Physics, roller-skating and more, the 2017 calendar is filling up with planned events for the Red Clover Kids.
Anyone interested in learning more about the Red Clover Kids Program should contact co-directors Alayna Westcom or Jeanelle Achee at [email protected] or MVSO at [email protected].  Both of the co -directors are former Miss Vermont’s with a passion for science and have careers in the medical field today.
