Just around the bend at 1050 Route 74 West in Shoreham, Vermont some of the best traditions of Addison County past and present come together. In addition to the mums, pumpkins and scarecrows that dot the countryside heralding the beginning of fall, rows of apple trees at the Douglas Orchard confirm the sweetness of the time of year and harvest season. The family has been on the land since 1898 and in the business of producing some of Addison County’s sweetest and tart apples and delicious cider. Douglas Orchard is in the hands of the fourth generation. Bob, Jr., Scott and the family are half way through picking a huge variety of apples. The sounds of laughter and chatter mix with that of tractors and the movement of the crop when you drive into the yard. Douglas Orchard is open daily 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and offers the opportunity to pick from the trees or purchase small or large amounts of all kinds of different types of apples. While Macintosh is the crowd favorite year after year, Douglas Orchard actually grows eighteen different types of apples. “The harvest was better than expected because it was a dry year,” shared Bob, Jr. Come on down to Shoreham and witness a harvest tradition that is as old Addison County itself. Douglas Orchard is the place to explore, pick and purchase apples and so much more as the leaves turn and the approaching bite of winter graces the early morning and our taste buds call out for all things apple. Make some memories and if you have time enjoy the Douglas Orchard Apple Tarte Recipe that is a favorite of generations of the Douglas family.
