The signs of both seasons were everywhere and the aroma of pancakes and maple syrup was in the air as the annual pancake breakfast was in full swing. The hubbub of the runners taking their place at the starting line of the annual 5K run focused attention as the crowds grew. People wearing the garments of summer filled the streets English and French were heard and menus at some booths carried the flavor of many nations. The largest maple on Main Street showcased a branch of leaves beginning to burst forth in hues of red. Teenagers and families savoring the last days of summer milled about in groups laughing and eating. Vergennes Day was happening and summer was once again transitioning to fall in the Little City.
The planners of the weekend, Addison County Chamber of Commerce created a festive atmosphere that included food, music, celebration, fishing, history, crafters and open houses offering something for everyone. Kicking off the festivities with a street dance featuring The Hitmen the weekend included Vergennes City Band, St. Andrew’s Pipeband, Simply Acoustic and LC Jazz. Bike were awarded in the annual Booked for Bikes program and 40 plus crafters offered wares that spanned the reach of made in Vermont. Horse & Wagon rides and face painting made it sweeter for those not normally exposed to the agricultural world and all ages gathered at the Bixby Library and Vergennes Fire Department. And throughout the downtown, merchants of all sizes had special sales. What started years ago as a way to celebrate community has evolved in Vergennes and surrounding communities to become destination events bringing out local people and hundreds of tourists as well.
Whether it was the lighting of the falls, the joy of the music or the simple pleasure of seeing people pause from their busy schedules to chat, Vergennes Day was a rousing success. As the falls lit up the crowd began to wane and the event had accomplished its simple mission and much more. People gathered in community with a purpose of celebrating the summer, the harvest and a way of life unique to the Champlain Valley.
