The VUHS wrestling community knows that Brandon Cousino had a banner junior year. In one year he went undefeated and was the only Vermont Wrestler to do so. He won every Varsity tournament except for the New England Championships. He was voted as one of the candidates by the referees as sportsmanship award at this year’s state tournament. He was the 5th Vergennes Commodore to win a State Championship since 2007, and was the third Commodore Wrestler to become an All- New England since 2013. Just this week, Cousino was recognized and honored as he was selected as the Vermont Wrestler featured in the national wrestling magazine “Win”. The publication, in its 22 year of publication named Cousino “Vermont’s Wrestler of the Year.”  Yet to hear Cousino talk about wrestling, it is all about the coming year and the new goals. “I do not know how they picked me as their Vermont high school wrestler of the year,” explained Brandon Cousino. “If they went on record or placements alone, there would be multiple other wrestlers that would have been picked over me (such as Raetz from MAU who got his 200th career wins during states and placed better than me at the New England Championships). I am quite surprised that I got this honor. I am glad to be honored on the national level like this though and cannot wait to actually earn this honor this coming season.”
Very quiet and unassuming about his wrestling and community service work, Cousino often downplays his incredible focus and work ethic while drawing the spotlight to his teammates or others in Vermont. “This all started in 4th grade,” shared Brandon’s dad Kirk Cousino. “Coach Kittredge saw him in a youth practice sitting on the edge of the mat paying attention and running the drills like he had goals in mind. Coach had the youth coaches move him in with the 5th and 6th graders and told him if he worked hard he could go anywhere. Look what has happened!”  As Cousino continues to train and wrestle this summer, he has his eyes set on his senior year and has some lofty goals. Coach Bissonette remarked, “This upcoming season he will without a doubt crush my career win record at VUHS (139) and set a new goal for future Vergennes wrestlers. As a coach, this is a great accomplishment to have the wins beat while I am still coaching. Very excited to see what this next year brings for Brandon.” A quiet young man with an incredible work ethic, the Valley Voice salutes Brandon Cousino and will follow his senior year with interest!
