Honoring and remembering our service men and women past and present took on different forms this past week for students in the ANWSU school district. Many students participated in a letter writing campaign sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution handwriting a letter to a person currently serving in the Armed Services with phrases like, ‘Thank you for your service’ and ‘my grandpa was a soldier,’ and even one four year old who drew a picture of their new kitten and promised, “to hug the kitten every night for all the nice service men and women.” The letters will be mailed and bring joy and a smile to those serving.
Eighth graders from VUMS also worked with American Legion Post #14 going to cemeteries in the five towns and replacing flags on the graves of former military from all wars and with over 1100 graves to be visited it is an annual effort involving the middle school, local Boy and Girl Scouts and several members of American Legion Post #14. While winter was not as harsh on the flags placed last year a new flag was put in each holder and the crisp red, white and blue flags add visual level of thanks to those who served their nation.
