Brian Steckley, chairman of the Green Mountain Lions Camp for the deaf and hard of hearing, spoke at the last meeting of the Vergennes Lions Club where he mentioned the need to get the word out about the camp.  Held each summer, in recent years in Brattleboro, the camp, which is free of charge for attendees between the ages of 8 and 18, uses American Sign Language (ASL) and is meant for not only the deaf and hearing youth, but also the siblings.  With mainstreaming these youngsters in public schools, it is very hard to find out who could benefit from such a camp program.  The camp is divided into two sessions: one 1-week camp for the younger group and one 2-week camp for the older group.
At the end of his talk, Steckley thanked the Vergennes club for their ongoing support for the club and expressed hope that they would continue to help, including trying to locate youth who would benefit from the camp.  Club President then presented Steckley with a check for $750, upon which Steckley commented that he gratefully accepted, but hadn’t expected such a prompt response.
