On Saturday, March 5th, three students representing the best orators in the state competed at Middlebury College for the honor of representing Vermont at the national competitions in Indianapolis, Indiana in April. Representing Hartford High School was senior Mateo Ellerson, who will be attending college in Washington D.C. and majoring in Political Science. Representing Fair Haven Union High School was senior Charlie Cacciatore, who will be attending Middlebury College in the fall and majoring in history. Representing Vergennes Union High School was junior Alyse Beauchemin, who currently plans on attending wither UVM or RPI with a career in aerospace engineering. After two rounds of competition and fifteen minutes of public speaking on the U.S. Constitution and selected amendments and articles, Beauchemin was declared the winner. A distinguished panel of judges including former Vermont governor Jim Douglas scored the three in many different areas of knowledge, public speaking ,and most importantly the role of the citizen in an democracy. American Legion Oratorical Director Karlene Devine spoke to the honor and privilege of hearing the young orators speak and that she felt great that members of the younger generation were so passionate about their country and the document granting us our rights and freedoms.  Began nationally in 1938, this program not only teaches research, writing and speaking skills, it passes on the knowledge of our nation's laws, history, and the rights and privileges of American citizenship. Beauchemin will represent American Legion Post # 14 at nationals in April.
