Millie Whitcomb grew up in Williston, Vermont and remembers a weekend treat of shopping with her aunt with her hard earned $3.00 allowance at a host of wonderfully quirky and unique stores on Church Street and the Champlain Mill. Whitcomb can close her eyes and still see the symphony of color, textures, shapes and often whimsical layouts of these gift shops where she spent hours picking out her prizes. Stickers were often a prized trophy for a child of the 1980’s as were small models, necklaces and gifts for family and friends. These weekend ventures were part of a carefree and special time in Whitcomb’s life and time with family.
Upon graduating high school Millie Whitcomb took the traditional route and spent thirteen years as an office manager, eight years working for a municipality and enjoyed her time but felt something was missing. “I woke up one morning,” remarked Millie, “and knew it was time for a change. I was missing the spontaneous and creative aspects of my early life.” Making the change was a bold move but the direction Whitcomb chose to take with an open heart. Already in business for own homemade soap Whitcomb had launched Tubby Treasures Emporium three winters before when it had been blisteringly cold and outside was off limits most of the winter months.
Tubby Treasures Emporium is located at 69 Monkton Road in Vergennes and started as a return to the shops of Whitcomb’s childhood and has delightfully morphed into more. Open 10:00-5:00 p.m. Monday- Saturday, Tubby Treasures Emporium is an artistic emporium featuring the works of at least twenty-five artisans and artists from all over the state. Before opening her doors Millie Whitcomb used Front Porch Forum, advertisements and Facebook to reach out to local artists who work in jewelry, photography, paint, textiles, local authors and more to find the best in a wide range of prices and carefully chose pieces for all seasons of giving or to celebrate life. “I have always loved this area,” shared Whitcomb, “and I have family in the area. This town and its wonderful buildings, Main Street and wonderful and unique shops drew me to this community to open up my own.”
Millie Whitcomb invites you to stop in or to check out the store on Facebook at Tubby Treasures Emporium. She can be reached at (802) 233-0589 or by email at [email protected]. Whitcomb is passionate about children’s literature and encouraging reading and plans to have in the future some readings of local children’s books and classic children’s literature as well as other featured artists events. For now, drive up and go in. The store is every bit as wonderful as those memories of her childhood and more items are coming in daily from all across the state. You might find a gift, discover a new artisan or find a piece of jewelry, photography or textiles that you cannot live without. One thing is for certain, you will enjoy meeting Millie and will have fun shopping Tubby Treasures Emporium.
