Just up the hill and round the bend from Lewis Creek Falls in North Ferrisburgh is one of those small treasures of Vermont that has to be seen to be appreciated.  Champlin Hill Antiques is open weekends from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. and on other days by chance or appointment. Champlin Hill Antiques offers not only a wonderfully eclectic selection of American and European antiques but the talents of owners Steve and Marna Tulin as well.
The couple has owned antique shops since 1966 in Manhattan and has been at their present location on Champlin Hill since 1993. Steve and Marna are originally from Lake Placid and were both high level professionals in law and psychotherapy respectively when Steve decided he did not want to be, “the richest man in the graveyard,” and the pair opted to raise their children away from the speed and pull of city life. The couple grew up with antiques in their homes and had a sense of what pieces were of use and value and began traveling to sales all over New England. “Whether you are shopping for your first apartment or a new home,” added Steve Tulin, “antique pieces are both practical and beautiful. Comparing prices of new furniture to prices of antique pieces will show the buyer what a good buy they are.” While Steve prefers early American County Furniture and Marna favors European pieces, Champlin Hill Antiques celebrates not only the pieces the couple have for sale but their own life choices to make the Green Mountain State their home.
Whether it was a simple tin scoop, handmade four drawer chests, a plethora of vintage quilts or sharing stories of his grandfather’s 1908 Adirondack Camp that still is a part of his life today, spending some time with Steve and Marna Tulin is a must do on any holiday shopper’s list or for someone motivated on discovering the gems of Addison County that are tucked away up just around the bend on back roads. The couple can be reached at (802)425-3383 or by email at [email protected]. If you want to come during the week, please call ahead but be sure to stop by on a weekend and follow the signs from RT 7, down Old Hollow Road to a turn up Champlin Hill Road to discover where antiques become more than heirlooms. They are wonderful pieces of history repurposed for 2015 with an appreciation for the craftsmanship and utility of their makers. Stop up and see a collection spanning 1700-2000.
