Snake Mountain, with a 900 foot elevation that gives a majestic view of the valley is a great day hike for families, visitors and novices of all sizes and shapes. It is located three miles from Addison Four Corners on Wilmarth Road, parking is available for vehicles and the climb is a lesson in appreciation for the natural beauty of Vermont and the history of changing business in the region. It leads to an incredible spot for photos and family meals and is often forgotten by many because of its location ‘kind of off the beaten path’. The trail was known as the Old Carriage Road and was actually in its time a road to the summit to the Grand View Hotel built circa 1870 by local Jonas Smith. While the Grand View Hotel burned just after the turn of the 1900's and only the foundation remains today, the views are still as spectacular and because the trail was originally a road it is wide and can handle lots of people walking together or in groups. A favorite hike of many locals, the total round trip to the summit and back to the trail head is just over 3.5 miles through beautiful wooded areas featuring a mixture of trees including birch, sugar maple, beech, white cedar, white pine and oak and a fragile bog area known as Cranberry Bog Jill Bourgeois shared pictures of a recent hike up Snake Mountain with her son and says that while she enjoys hikes of all sizes and lengths, there is something special about Snake Mountain and she loves that it is accessible for the whole family. Pencil in on your summer list a Snake Mountain Hike, one of Vermont's treasures tucked away down a back road waiting to make special moments with you, your friends and family.
