The Veterans of Foreign War Post #7823 was originally chartered in June 1921 and has been an active part in Middlebury and other Addison County communities for ninety-four years. While the original post building was located in Frog Hollow and remained there for decades, the group made the investment and built a new post and hall at 530 Exchange Street in June 1990. At the heart of the group’s mission is serving the needs of veterans and families of those currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. Post #7823 is also a center gathering point for all ages and offers monthly programs designed for fun and community. On the first Sunday of the month between 8:00 am – 10:00 am Post #7823 is the site of a community breakfast where for $8.00 people are treated to eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, sausage gravy, hash brown potatoes and real maple syrup. The breakfast is mouthwatering, made using local products and is a great way to start off your Sunday morning. If fresh fish is more to your liking, stop by Post #7823 on the third Friday of each month for freshly caught Haddock, French Fries or Baked Potato and a wonderful array of homemade desserts. It is served between 5:00-7:00 p.m., the cost is $10.00 and you are guaranteed to not walk away hungry. What is great food without some music? On the third Sunday of each month between 11:00-4:30 p.m., a three dollar donation will get you some of the best fiddle music and dancing anywhere. Come and check out a variety of local fiddlers and drummers whose goal is to get you out of your chair and dancing. Another group that comes to the VFW is the local seniors who are connected with the Addison County on Aging and have a senior luncheon at the post. One Monday a month in the VFW Hall many young and old alike come to the Post for Bingo, sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary. There is a lot of laughter and fun to be had. And remember if you need a space to have a wedding, special party, retirement gathering or even a family reunion, Post #7823’s hall is spacious and easily holds 200 people. People wanting more information about hall rental or the VFW programs are encouraged to call (802) 388-9468 or email them at [email protected]. Post #7823 continues its mission to serve and be a part of the lives of people in the Champlain Valley and helping the community with donations to Relay for Life, Camp Takumta and the Dodge House in Rutland. There will be an upcoming Facebook page that can be used for information, but come and stop on by. Have a meal; listen to a fiddle, and even play a couple of games of Bingo.
