Dutton Smith

Middlebury - Dutton Smith, 92, of Middlebury, died at home on May 22, 2015 with his family by his side – cared for and very much loved to the last. He was born on March 28, 1923 in Springfield Massachusetts, the son of Rodney and Geraldine (Dutton) Smith.
His high school years were divided between Darrow School in New Lebanon, NY, Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vt,  and Severn School near Annapolis, MD. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on both PT boats and LSTs. In 1947, he married Catharine Wheeler Bevin in Garden City, Long Island, and the couple moved to Middlebury, Vermont where Dutton attended Middlebury College, graduating in 1951. He worked for the Addison Independent as Advertising Sales Manager, then Simmonds Precision Products in Vergennes, where he worked as a mechanical engineer. In 1961, he partnered with Jack Beckwith to form Beckwith and Smith Motors, which became the first agency to sell GM cars in the state. In 1965, he formed Dutton Smith & Company to design and build custom homes in Addison and Chittenden counties, and was responsible for developing Painter Hills. In the late seventies, he built Fire and Ice Restaurant, and then became part owner. His interest in restaurants led him to the purchase of Palmer’s Dairy Bar in 1980, which he renovated and renamed Rosie’s. He sold the popular eatery in 1986.
As a founding member of the Middlebury Community Players in 1959, he encouraged community involvement in local theater productions. In the late 60s, he collaborated with Ernie Stires on a musical, “The Permit,” a spoof of small town government. It ran for 21 performances at Mr. Ups, and raised $6,000 for the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. Dutton and Ernie created two more shows together, including “Tick Tock Bevin and His Cocomobile” (a satire on the automobile industry), and “Johnny’s Town” (a play about a local character in Middlebury in the 30s and 40s – Johnny Kenworthy). Dutton received the Vermont Playwrights Award in 1988 for his stage play, “Holy Matrimony.” The Players are still performing in their new permanent home, the Town Hall Theater.
Always a devotee of sailing, he built a 36-foot steel sloop and with his wife, Kay, sailed out of Florida to many destinations in southern waters during the winters of 1986 to 2002.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Catharine; four children, Torrey Joy and husband David, Carlie Barnhart and husband Terry, Allen Smith and wife Rose Lovshin, and Dutton Smith, Jr. and wife Kathleen (Wildey) Smith; 7 grandchildren, Tim Joy and wife Elin, Nick Joy and wife Xiaoli He, Zoe Wood, Abby Lovshin-Smith and soon-to-be husband Mitchell Watson, Rini Lovshin-Smith and husband Declan McDaid, Tyler Smith and wife Meg, Amanda Corse and husband Curtis, and 5 great-grandchildren.
