When the Seth Warner-Rhoda Farrand Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held a special meeting on Saturday, March 14th they had company who celebrated a long standing tradition in the community. The DAR chapter has honored one senior as a Good Citizen yearly since 1945 and added that name to a list of VUHS graduates who have become leaders in communities around the state and nation. DAR regent Joy Minns has spent the last year using social media to locate all past DAR recipients and communicated with all but three inviting them to the gathering. While many were too far away to attend, many wrote back about receiving the honor and thanking the DAR for continuing to sponsor this award.
The DAR Chapter was formed on October 6, 1902 by local citizens Mary Goss Bacon, Almeda Twitchell, Lois Lyon Carsley, Mary J. Fish, Ella Warner Fisher, Ruth Booth Fisher, Elizabeth B. Haven, Nellie B. Herrick, Lucy Cutting Hindes, Anna B. Harrington, Kate Allen McCuen, L. Augusta Norton, and Carrie Norton and not only perpetuates the memory of men and women who gave America its independence, but encourages research in relation to the Revolutionary War. Present at this special gathering were DAR Good Citizens from as early as 1957 up to and including the 2015 honoree Erik Eisenhower.
Celebrating and fostering Good Citizenship has been a mission and partnership of the DAR and VUHS since 1945. All present spoke highly of their high school memories and how their roles in the community stem from the lessons they learned at home; school and watching adults around them set the example.
