Shawna Shortsleeve joined the Dance Club because she really likes to dance and thought it might be a way to learn new moves while getting good exercise at the same time. It is now two years later that have included many performances and a lot of dancing. Shawna is entering the last six months of her senior year and looks at the Dance Club as a way to be supportive of the community and meet new people. “I think people might be surprised to learn that as a club we are not bound to competitions like many teams,” shared the senior captain of the VUHS Dance Club. “We perform because we enjoy doing it and we focus on a variety of material and audiences. In the past we have focused on performing for veterans and the elderly but this year we are branching out to include children’s groups as well.”
The current Dance Club is comprised of a mixed group of grades seven-twelve with dance experience ranging from none to many years of professional lessons. “It really is nice to see how people respond to the dancing,” shared Shawna. “We go there to make sure to put a smile on their faces and to also have time to talk to people which is where the friendships really start.” The group has added line and ballroom dancing this year to their routine and find that the elderly will even get up and join in. “We are not competitive dancers,” explained Shawna, “so while we focus on movement and synchronization, we are more focused on movement and fun. My favorite routines this year include hip hop because of the cool footwork and a new routine to a current music piece called Uptown Funk.”
The club will be entering its third year in 2016 and the group plans on retaining club status and being more of an introduction to dance than a competitive team. Whether it is jazz, hip hop, ballroom, salsa, or even a disco routine all ages are welcome and no experience is required. Shawna and the Dance Club will be out and about this winter and hope to bump into you at nursing homes or after school programs. All are welcome to come by VUHS and see what it is all about. The music is on, the feet are in motion and the plan for more fun is on the horizon.
