Otter Creek Yoga, in Middlebury’s Marble Works District, offers twenty classes a week for students of all levels. Owner Joanna Colwell was born in New York City; raised in San Francisco but has called the Green Mountain State her home since 2000. Colwell shared, “I was drawn to yoga as a non-competitive way to keep myself fit and healthy, to learn about the workings of my own mind and to deepen my spiritual understanding of the world.” Colwell was twenty one years old when fortune allowed her to meet an Iyengar teacher and her love of Yoga began. She worked under teachers in California and currently studies with Rebecca Weisman, Janice Vien and Janet MacCloud. Before opening up Otter Creek Yoga, Colwell spent several years holding classes in church basements and schools around Addison County. In 2006 she decided it was time to have a home base for yoga in Middlebury, and bring together a collection of wonderful teachers.
One of the greatest misconceptions about Yoga is the idea that people have to be incredibly flexible and limber to be successful at Yoga. “Some people think they can’t do yoga because they are too stiff,” explained Joanna Colwell. “I say not doing yoga because you’re not flexible is like saying you can’t take a bath because you are too dirty. If you want to try an interesting, challenging and stimulating way to take care of your body, mind and heart, definitely give yoga a try. The teachers at Otter Creek Yoga have over a hundred years of combined yoga experience and we love sharing our practice with our community. We specialize in helping beginners have a safe and nurturing environment to start out on their yoga journey!”
Yoga is an amazing addition to a physical regimen and a place to start boosting physical and mental health. Another inviting feature about Otter Creek Yoga is the array of styles of yoga offered. People wanting to check out the teachers can go to the website www.ottercreekyoga.com , call them at 388-1961 or simply stop in. All steps toward health and wellness start with an idea or a suggestion and if you are a member of the Middlebury Natural Foods Co-Op, the first class is free. So, as the holidays come upon us and we all set health goals and resolutions, know that Addison County has a plethora of options right here to help you on your way.
