Every year the Vergennes Lions Club donates money to HOPE (Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects) in Middlebury, Vermont to purchase turkeys for holiday meal baskets for Addison County families in need. Formally known as Addison County Community Action Group (ACCAG), HOPE and the Vergennes Lions Club have a long standing partnership to bring joy and food to local families in need over the holidays. This year, the fundraising has a new partner involving the American Legion Post # 14 Ladies Auxiliary, who are teaming up with the Vergennes Lions Club to host a dinner and dance on Saturday, October 11th at Post # 14. The profits will go to buying not only turkeys for one holiday meal, but for two.
Committee chair, Lion, and Ladies Auxiliary member Debbie Brace shared that, “ while most people are not aware of it, any family that qualifies for  food stamps is eligible to go to HOPE in Middlebury and get the fixing for a holiday meal.” With the growing numbers of Addison County families in need, Brace felt that instead of a family having to choose either Christmas or Thanksgiving to get a meal, that there should be a push to secure enough turkeys for both seasonal gatherings.
The dinner and dance is a sure hit with the community because it features the wonderful homemade Chicken & Bisket Dinner, but there is also a dance following featuring the music of the 50’s, 60’s and a little Country to boot. Tickets are $ 10.00 for the dinner, $ 10.00 for the dance or a ticket for both is only $ 15.00. People wanting to purchase tickets can call Martha DeGraaf (877-9986) or Debbie Brace (324-1758) or stop in and buy them at Jackman Fuels. Tickets are also availabale at Post # 14 in Vergennes and at the door. One hundred percent of profit is going to HOPE. And both the Legion Auxiliary and the Vergennes Lions have a challenge for Middlebury Lions Clubs and Auxiliary. They want you to also help raise funds for turkeys so that no Addison County family has to go without for a holiday meal for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Come and enjoy a great meal, some wonderful music and help two strong civic groups make a goal become a reality.  Take out dinners are also available! Win a door prize or maybe one for best costume!
