When the first Tin Lizzy rolled off the assembly line of Henry Ford’s factory in 1908 not only did American life change but a love affair was born. Few inventions hold such a revered spot in the lives of Americans than the automobile and there are millions for whom the automobile is not just a way to get around but an expression of individuality, personality and lifelong passion. Several of those automobile owners and enthusiasts were a part of the group that gathered on Sunday, August 17th at American Legion Post #14 for the first annual car show.
The show was hosted by the Sons of the American Legion Post #14and the strong showing is encouraging for those already thinking ahead to next year. “The proceeds from the show benefit two different veterans’ organization,” shared SAL officer Joe Sullivan. “Half of the proceeds are being donated to the Dodge House in Rutland and the other half to the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, Vermont. The Dodge House is a non-profit organization that offers substance abuse free housing and specific programs designed to provide veterans who find themselves homeless a base in the community they volunteered to serve and defend. Dodge House offers shelter, clothing, meals and opportunities for employment.
The event was a mixture of all classes of classic and collectible cars with enthusiasts admiring them, swapping stories and strategies. Some were there to appreciate, others to scope out their next car to add to the collection and all enjoyed the camaraderie and fun while supporting programs aiding America’s veterans. Catching the eye were a 1958 Chevrolet Corvette, a 1955 Sedan, a 1971 Buick Riveria, a 1952 Chevy Pick Up and several with unique and beautiful paint jobs. The SAL would like to thank their gold sponsors Foster Motors, Green Pastures Meats, Classic Stitching, Valley Voice, Addison Independent, Cabot, The Shed Small City Market, McKenzie and their silver sponsors G Stone Motors, MacIntyre Fuels, Pater Markowski RPM, and bronze sponsors Addison County Automotive, Rouse Tire, Jackman Fuels, Champlain Valley Equipment,  Snake Mountain Cruisers, People United Bank (Vergennes) Vergennes Redemption, Mid State Towing, Ethan Allen Highway Storage and # 1 Auto Parts.
Two things are for certain. First, the SAL from Post #14 will be planning and looking forward to this event again for the coming years and for those who love automobiles there is nothing better than a Vermont summer afternoon, a parking lot full of collectable and unique vehicles and people who share your love to talk too.
