The original St. Ambrose Parish Church in Bristol had to be torn down for safety reasons in 1971 and on July 31st of that same year the present St. Ambrose Parish was dedicated. Both churches were built with the generosity of parishioners and the people of Bristol which continues to be demonstrated today. The St. Ambrose Parish community is excited to announce that within a month the parishioners and members of the community will be able to access the Parish Hall underneath the church via an elevator.
The parish has talked about the need for an upgrade and access for people who cannot traverse the stairs for the past twenty years. Father Yvon Royer shared, “As Pastor of the Parish I have been sadden by the fact that members of our parish and the greater community have not been able to join us for our parish and community events in the parish hall because of their inability to navigate the stairs. I will rejoice when I see their smiles because they are able to stay connected to their fellow community members. Again this joy is made possible by the generosity of so many people.”
The renovations in addition to benefiting the parish and parishioners have made possible an expansion for the Have a Heart Food Shelf which serves the Greater Bristol area and has been housed in the Parish Hall. The lack of the elevator not only made it difficult for people seeking to come to the food shelf, but for the Food Shelf staff themselves. Have a Heart Food Shelf director Rebecca Price remarked, “ Porter Knight spearheaded fundraising efforts which began in April 2014 and will conclude in August 2014.” Now in addition to the elevator and more space Have a Heart Food Shelf will be able to reach out to more people. Father Royer also shared, “The Parish is very thankful the Have a Heart Food Shelf will continue to be associated with St. Ambrose and we are thankful for the funds that they helped raise to make this project possible. We gratefully accept their check of $17,545 which they have raised through their patrons.  It is truly a match made in Heaven!” The total renovation project included an elevator, complete new kitchen, handicapped bathrooms and upgrades on all safety codes.
