Showing their respect, gratitude and recognition that there are many ways to serve, VUHS US History students joined in with American Legion Ladies Auxiliary # 14, Sons of American Legion Squadron# 14, Local Boy Scout Troops, and other individuals to perform the annual ritual of replacing the flags on the graves of those who served in the Armed Forces. Blanketing the cemeteries of North Ferrisburgh, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes, Addison and Waltham, the groups replace annually over 1400 flags. When asked how many of their family served or had served, over 75% of the teens present raised their hands. Vermonters have a long standing tradition of service to the nation and that was very evident to the teens who replaced as many as 150 flags in small cemeteries and 500 in larger ones. Veterans: Never to be Forgotten is the theme of this year's Memorial Day Parade and it echoes the sentiments of those teens and youth making the trips into the cemeteries to pay respect. " It is one way to show we remember and we understand," shared one sophomore.
