Pink, a color of celebration and determination is most closely associated with the American Cancer Society. It has been worn in races and battles against cancer by literally hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. One of the latest to don the “Pink” warrior mantle is local teen Nathan Rowell who ran in the Shale Hill Polar Bear Challenge on Saturday, February 1 benefitting the American Cancer Society. “I ran the race and accepted sponsors for both the experience of participating in an obstacle course race and to raise money for the American Cancer Society. I only planned on raising about $800 but our proceeds exceeded $2500 thanks to all of the wonderful sponsors,” shared Rowell. “Pink is the color that symbolizes breast cancer awareness so it seemed logical to choose something that people would remember me by and something that stands out.”
Rowell, in addition to raising awareness and having fun shared that the experience made him aware of just how powerful a community of people can be when they join together. Encouraging other teens to undertake a cause and get involved Rowell commented, “Think of how you want to be remembered and make a plan to stand out from everyone else.” Nathan was also running in celebration of his mother who is fighting breast cancer. Cancer touches so many lives and in a community the size of Addison County participating in the fight gives people not only a way of sharing commitment and support but brings us all closer to the day when cancer will be on the list of diseases no longer needing new technology because it will be finally beaten once and for all.
